Altus, Oklahoma is a small town in western Oklahoma. It was founded in 1907 by James D. Altus and his family. The Altus School District was formed in 1959, and the city of Altus became an incorporated municipality in 1980. The population was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. The history of Altus can be traced back to 1907 when James D. Altus and his family founded the town on the banks of the Arkansas River just east of present-day Altus. At first, it consisted only of settlers from Arkansas County who had come overland from that state. By 1910, however, there were also settlers from Muskogee County arriveveither by train or wagon train. In 1959, the city of Altus became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,711 residents after voters approved a proposal to do so by a vote of 56% to 44%. In 1980, following passage of the OKC City Charter Amendment Act (Pact No. 2), which amended Article XIII § 5(a) of the City Code to provide for incorporation within the limits established by statute rather than at will subject to repeal at any time by ordinance or resolution thereof (the "City Charter Amendment Act"), all other municipalities within boundaries defined by law (including but not limited to Ironton Village), except for Altus itself (and including Butte Creek Village), became full-fledged cities pursuant to that act;Altus being one such municipality .
