Altus is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, located on the Altus River. The population was 20,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The Altus Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Altus community was founded by ranchers in 1881 as an agricultural settlement on the north bank ofthe Altus River about east of present-day Altus. The first post office opened in 1882 and served until 1907; it was called "Norman." In 1902, a school, also called Norman, was built and operated for six years before being closed due to lack of funds; it reopened in 1906 under the name "Altus High School." In 1916, a new Post Office and general store were built and named after John Pemberton (1863-1928), an early settler and landowner who donated 5 acres (20 hectares) bordering the river to be used as a town site. By 1928,Altus had developed into a small town with a population over 10 people; its first general store had been replaced by a movie theater that year and other commercial buildings had been erected over time including: a hospital (1930), fire hall (1936), library (1938), churches (1940–1945), jail(1950s), water tower(1960s). In 1970, residents voted to change their name from "Altus" to "Tulsa." That same year, construction began on what would become Tulsa Regional Medical Center whichopened its doors in 1974. A second hospital – Tulsa General Hospital – opened its doors in 1984 following completion of local fundraising efforts led by Mayor Don Hagerman.. With rapid growth came increased traffic congestion which caused several downtown businesses to close including: local banks (. 1976); Dunlap Manufacturing Co., Inc.; First American Paper Company (. 1977); aluminum smelters (. 1979); various retailers (. 1981–1983). In 1984, Tulsa State University became one of two institutions awarded university status by governor David Walters; this event helped promote economic development within Tulsa through such endeavors as job training programs for factory workers employed at nearby factories.. Altus, Oklahoma is a small town in the south-central portion of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,717 at the 2010 census and 6,569 as of 2016. Altus is located in Comanche County on the Arkansas River. It is bordered by Wichita County to the north and east, Haskell County to the south, and Blackwell County to the west. The first people who settled in what is now Altus were Athabascans who arrived there around 1821 from Spanish San Luis Potosi. They built trading posts along the Arkansas River and soon attracted other Native American groups such as Kiowa, Apache, Cheyenne, Arapaho and Tonkawa to their area for trade purposes. In 1829 French traders founded Fort Arbuckle near present day Altus with Major Pierre Dorion as its commander. The fort served as a supply depot for Indian forces fighting against General Andrew Jackson during his Creek War of 1809-1812 which resulted in Texas gaining independence from Mexico. Afterward Fort Arbuckle reverted back to Mexican control and no new development took place in this area until after World War II when oil discoveries began hereabouts (see also: Altschul Oil Field). In 1907 Altus became an open-air swimming pool owned by local businesswoman Fannie Byrd following her donation of land adjacent to her home for this purpose (see also: Fannie Byrd Park). Today it still offers opportunities for swimming not only through its pool but also through its attached water park which features both indoor and outdoor pools/spas including an aquarium/. In addition to being a popular tourist spot it has been used as a filming location for movies such as "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy (2002), "Oklahoma!" (2008) and “Divergent” (2015). Allied troops landed at Camp Bowie on January 17th 1945 during World War II while occupying Japan; they were later known as Japanese Ground Forces United States Army Post Number One or JGUSA(Pt.) 1st Armored Division (). On February 2nd 1945 JGUSA(Pt.) 1st Armored Division started combat operations against Imperial Japanese Navy forces at Tinian Island off Taiwan; engagements continued until March 11th 1945 when withdrawal commenced due To lack of food supplies (). As part of Operation Downfall all Allied forces withdrew from Japan on April 9th1945(). At Camp Bowie post #1 Japanese soldiers surrendered on September 3rd1945 (). Later that year 4 USMC Infantry Regiment was transferred from Okinawa Island into camp #1 effective October 15th1945 ().
In 1907, Altus was founded as a small town by farmers who brought their animals and crops to the area. The town gradually grew and by 1927, it had a population of around 100 people. By the early 1930s, the town had grown to over 1,000 people and it officially became an independent city in 1936. The city experienced rapid growth in the 1940s and 1950s, with its population reaching 6,500 people by 1955. In 1964, Altus was renamed Oklahoma City after then-Governor Orval Faubus declared that the name "Oklahoma" should not be used any longer because of its association with former Confederate States President Andrew Johnson. The city's growth slowed during the 1960s and 1970s due to various factors such as economic recession. However, Oklahoma City experienced a rebirth in the 1990s through new development along Interstate 20 and other downtown areas. As of 2010, Oklahoma City had a population of over 10 million people.
