The first guns in Altus were brought over by the Indian traders in the late 1800s. The town was founded on a ranch that belonged to Chief Joe and his people. The first store in Altus was built in 1892. At that time, there were only about 20 residents in Altus. By 1912, the population had increased to 100 and by 1929, it had reached 350. During World War II, Altus became one of the largest target towns in the United States because of its location near Muleshoe Army Airfield. Many people from all over Oklahoma came toAltus to take part in the war effort. After the war, Altus experienced a period of growth which included several new buildings being constructed including a high school and a library. In 1967, an ordinance was passed which required all businesses with more than five employees to have female clerks at all times. This amendment helped to create a more equal society for women and gave them better opportunities than previous generations had been given. Today,Altus is known as one of America's most segregated cities because it has not allowed any black people into its city limits since they were prohibited by law from owning firearms

Altus is a small city located in the northwest corner of Oklahoma. The population was 9,902 at the 2010 census. Altus is the county seat for Creek County and is located on the confluence of the Altus River and Canada River. The city contains two museums, one general store, four churches (two Baptist and two Methodist), three schools (one private, one public), a post office, a hospital, and an airport. The first known settlers in what is now Altus were two men who crossed over from Arkansas in 1849. They named their new settlement after General David Barrow's headquarters on Mount Carmel in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. In 1861, when war began between Mexico and Confederate States of America, Altus became part of Union Territory 8th Kansas under Major-General John Custer's command as part of Operation Crossroads. The city was abandoned by November 1862 because of repeated Indian attacks against Union forces positioned there along the Canada River. In March 1865 Colonel George Hance ordered construction of Fort Worth Mission Station on the Canadian River west of present-day Altus to serve as a military supply depot for General William Taggart's troops encamped at Ft Worth during the Siege of Fort Worth. After Taggart surrendered on April 6, 1865, control of this outpost passed to civilian authorities until May 1865 when it reverted back to military control under Ulysses S Grant as part of his Overland Campaigns against Confederate forces across Texas/Oklahoma border areas which ended with Vicksburg surrender on July 4th that year. Early 20th century growth in what would become Altus took place due to transportation opportunities opened up by railroad development throughout much Midwest during this time period including initial construction through Comanche Post Road east from Tulsa into Creek County starting about 1911 primarily serving Wichita Falls area then continuing northeastward into creek county reached its peak about 1920 with establishment along North Canadian Avenue then East Canadian Avenue near First National Bank building now home to library/gallery complex called University Place where several thousand people lived before becoming blighted by some speculative development which destroyed many historic businesses including three frame homes built about 1910called "Old Settlers' House" now used as museum Guided Tour building inside First National Bank complex also contains remains from original mission station . Although major employers within downtown briefly ceased operations during late 20th century economic slump most attributable locally were local government employment services related agencies such as Social Security Administration mainframe plant closed in 1987 but still operates today providing services statewide www.altustxo.com/.
