Altsus was founded in 1907 by colonists from the east Texas town of Altus. The town was named for General James A. Altus, who served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first store in Altsus was opened by Wm. H. Clements and his brother-in-law, J.H. Baker, on Main Street in 1907. The early settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, beans, flour and other goods to sell at local markets. In 1916, Altsus had a population of about 350 residents and it became a city in 1941 when it incorporated as a result of an act passed by the Oklahoma Legislature.
