Altus is a small town in Oklahoma, located about 30 miles east of Tulsa on the Altus- Jenks Road. The population was 3,569 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County seat area. The first people to live in what is now Altus were the Wichita and Pawnee Indians who hunted and gathered food near present-day Jenks. They built their village on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River. In 1827, Major James Wilkinson founded Fort Washita on the Arkansas River at present day Jenks, to protect settlers traveling through that region. In 1829, Captain John Atchison established an Indian trading post at what is now Altus after finding gold at Calico Butte in modern Wyoming. A post office called "Atchison" was established there in 1836; it was discontinued in 1892 because it was Marengo County's only town with mail service when that county was created from Muskogee County. In 1840, General George Hennepin sent his forces into what is now Muskogee County to suppress a slave uprising led by Hugh Lawson alias Black Hawk (the future US Senator Andrew Johnson). He destroyed much property and killed many cattle while also capturing some hundred slaves including Lawrence's father and uncle before returning home without further incident In 1865, during American Civil War efforts to free all slaves within Union territory north of Texas (Oklahoma included), Confederate General Robert Ewell occupied Altus for two weeks before withdrawing westward over the Canadian border into Canada where he surrendered his army unconditionally—a symbolic gesture that ended World War II for America south of Mexico City . The fortifications used by Ewell include Fort Washita which still stands today close to Interstate 40 just east of Altus; Assembled July 1861 - September 1865

It was renamed to its present name on November 15, 1907 after Altus County seat of Jenks became part of Tulsa County. The first settler in what is now Altus was George Ayer who arrived in 1879. Other early settlers included J.D. Cook and Wm Hickey. A schoolhouse and sawmill were built in Altus in 1881-82 by Jno Haggerty and Wm Sargent respectively. The town's first store opened in 1886 by Phebe Fenton with help from her husband John Fenton Sr.. The first doctor in Altus was Dr James McNaught who arrived about 1888. He performed many surgeries at the old Jenks School House which served as a hospital until it burned down in 1910). In 1907 Altus became an independent city under the name of "Altus." On November 15, 1907 it lost its status as a county seat when Jenks became part of Tulsa County
In 1907, the Altus school district was created from a part of the Tulsa school district. The first principal of the new Altus school district was Dr. John A. Jenkins. In 1912, Altus had its first gymnasium and in 1916 it had its first library.
