In 1927,Altus was renamed after General John Pemberton Wright – one of America's most decorated soldiers during World War I. The name change helped promote local businesses and make Altus more visible to national authorities. In 1945, when Japan occupied Japan during World War II, Altus responded with patriotic sentiment by becoming known as "Japanae City." Despite this designation (and occasionalAFL games played at Municipal Stadium), little changed until 1993 when Interstate 44 came through town and destroyed much of downtown; however, new development has since begun to improve aspects of life in the formerly struggling community.
On July 3, 1907, the first post office in Altus was established. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer and his Regiment of Cavalry. In 1960, Altus became a city. On October 1, 1973, the Oklahoma Legislature passed a bill to rename the city Altus after Nebraska state legislator John D. Altus.
