In 1942, Altus became an independent city and became known as the "City of Towers." In 1948-49, construction began on what is now Alvarado High School which opened in 1949. The school served grades 8-12 until it closed in 2003 due to budget cuts by then- Mayor Donny Hathaway. As of 2010 there are still no plans to reopen Alvarado High School or any other public schools within the community because of budget limitations created by state government austerity measures。 According to the 2010 US Census dataAltus had a total population of 2,564 people including 798 households and 587 families residing therein; with a median household income of $41,514 and a poverty rate of 17%. Altus, Oklahoma is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The Altus community began as a trading post on the Arkansas River in 1867 and became an incorporated town in 1875. It was named for General George Armstrong Custer after he was killed during the Battle of Little Bighorn in October 1879. The Altus Post Office operated from 1889 to 1907. It was moved to its current location on US 71 in 1907. The first store opened in Altus on November 25, 1903 by Fannie Beattie and her husband Wm Henson Beattie II. In 1924 the first movie theater opened in Altus with 3 screens and a seating capacity of 100 people. In 1951 it closed after one year due to financial problems. The only other structure left standing from that time is the old fire station which still stands today and is used as part of the city's museum complex
