Altus, Oklahoma is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. The Altus community began as a small Indian settlement on the Altus River in 1881. It was named for General George Armstrong Custer. The first post office in Altus was established in 1885. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,827. The current mayor is Donny Bogan and the city manager is Orville Freeman Jr.. The federal government claimed title to all of what are now Stephens County back in 1868 when it acquired land from Ottawa and Miami Creek bands of Choctaw Nation Indians. For many years this area layuteness went unclaimed until developers came along and started developing it into a thriving community known today as Altus. One of the earliest pioneers to come to Altus was Augustus Waddell who arrived on horseback from Missouri on July 15th,1881. He set up shop near what is now Park Avenue and Main Street before settling down about two miles (3 km) east of present-day Altus on what is now called Waddell's Ranch which he renamed "Oklahoma." By 1888 Waddell had built his own log cabin complete with outhouse and barn which still stands today adjacent to US Highway 287 east of town limits. This early pioneer spirit continues to be seen throughout today's townsfolk who work tirelessly every day towards maintaining their vibrant culture and economy while also helping support local schools and businesses! Gaston Leroy Latham arrived in 1880 also coming overland via Texas with his family following within months of each other....Latham Claimed land just northwest of present day Oklahoman along the banks of the Arkansas River .....he laid claim to 160 acres including what is now both Park Avenue & Main Street...he naming it after General George Armstrong Custer.....Latham opened his store here November 6th 1890 ..............In 1901 Latham sold his store &orge armstrong custer land east side main street oklahoma
