Altdus (population: 2,371) is a small town in Warren County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. Altus is located on the Altus River and has a total area of 21 square miles (58 km²). The climate in this area is typical of the Great Plains region with severe cold spells followed by hot spells. The first permanent habitation in what is now Altdus Township was laid out by Capt. James Ketchum on November 7, 1868, during the Dakota War. At that time it was part of the Kiowa Nation. An Indian Agency was established at Cherokee Agency about two miles east of present-day Altdus on July 10, 1870; here Captain Ketchum erected a trading post which he named Fort Washita. In 1875 Major James Hays sent three companies of cavalry to garrison this post; but they were soon withdrawn after finding no plunder or hostile Indians in sight. Shortly thereafter Colonel John Wickersham arrived from Wichita City with orders to take possession and make peace with these Sioux under Chief Red Cloud; but before he could arrive there were several collisions between his troops and Sioux warriors near Forts Washita and Blackwater Creek resulting in many casualties on both sides. In 1880 Fort Washita became an open air prison for Dakota prisoners who had been incarcerated at Muskogee since February 28th that year when the fortifications at Wichita City were destroyed by General Sherman’s march through central Oklahomaeele into Indian Territory protesting US encroachment into that countryurdue having been forced thereto by Tecumseh’s War against Mexico The fortifications at Wichita City were finally destroyed on October 17th following a siege lasting eleven days which resulted in loss of life on both sides including nine officers and men killed while defense saw only one man killed until relieved six hours later by Company G under Captains Kearny and Edmonson As late as 1907 Altus residents still used traditional methods for their fishing including using nets made from willow logs long stretched over poles set deep within water where a hole had been bored through one end so you could place your catch inside During World War IAltus residents mobilized to supply munitions plants located outside their town helped build roads necessary for transport goods across great distances

The first white people to live in Altus, Oklahoma were the Searles brothers. They arrived in 1885 and started a grocery store. The town was named for General James Altus, who fought in the Mexican-American War.
