Altus, Oklahoma is a small town in the US state of Oklahoma. It is located in Stephens County, northeast of Tulsa and east of Muskogee. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name Altus comes from the Kiowa word "al'ta" meaning "place where there are trees." The first Europeans to explore and settled this area were the traders Juan de Oñate and Vicente de Mesa. They named this area Altus because of its distant location from any other populated areas in the region. In 1857, John Wesley Powell reached Altus on his survey for the American Land Company. He named it after George WASHINGTON, 2nd President of America who had been born in London, England on December 14th, 1785. In 1870, James PEOGHETT founded what is now Grain Valley Oil Fields near Altus with the idea of developing oil resources. However, due to difficult financial times and competition by others in that industry he abandoned his plans for an oilfield at Altus in 1879; however, he did continue to operate a mill here until 1907 when it closed down due to lack of customership and competition from larger mills closer to Tulsa. In 1907 two brothersnamed Harry McDermottand John McDermott opened a grocery store at 7 Main Street which became known as "the old store". This store served as an important center for local trade until 1955 when Interstate 35 connected Tulsa with Wichita Falls through that town's central business district (CBD). As I-35 increased traffic along its route through Stephens County agricultural land began to be developed into large housing tracts called "Blooming Grove". Although many businesses closed during the late 1960s as disco music infiltrated popular culture throughout much of America during that decade (due largely to suburban development outside urban centers), one local business which refused to go out of business was The Old Store at 7 Main Street which continued operations until 2006 despite having no overhead signage or advertising remaining after years spent being shadowsed by newer buildings on nearby streets. In recent years there has been significant focus on renovating/restoration efforts associated with both downtownAltus' restored courthouse dating back to 1911 while also including several periodical stores such as The Oklahoman newspapers building built between 1904 - 1922 adjacent thereto; plus some new retail space inside city limits currently occupied by KFC

In 1907, the Altus Indian Agency was organized. The agency was located on the east side of Altus, about three miles south of present-day Tulsa. It served as a reservation for the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. The agency received its start with land that had been purchased from the Peotah and Wichita tribes by Major General George Armstrong Custer in 1874. In 1907, it became part of the Oklahoma Territory. In 1910, the Indian Commission proposed to Congress that all reservations in Oklahoma be dissolved and divided into homogeneous unitsrace areas so as to better manage their populations and resources. The proposal failed to gain traction and no such action was taken until 1912 when Congress passed an act establishing the Cherokee Nation in eastern Oklahoma territory. In 1916, Altus Agency land east of Tulsa were transferred to the Creek Nation through an agreement between then-Oklahoma Governor Holley Hunt and then-Creek Nation President John Ross Johnson. This happened despite objections from some tribal members who felt their lands would be lost if they ceded them back to government control.
