Altus is a small town in Oklahoma, located about 30 miles north of the state capital, Oklahoma City. The population was 5,500 at the 2010 census. Altus is part of the Muskogee County metropolitan area and it is served by the Altus Independent School District. The name "Altus" comes from Ahtna and may have been derived from an Otoe word meaning "opposite." There are no known historical references to this name in any location in present-day Oklahoma. However, when US Cavalry General George Armstrong Custer arrived here on July 6, 1885 for his famous Bannockburn Campaign, he spelled his new place's name as "Altuis," which probably came from this Ahtna origin. It appears that some early settlers here were Choctaw who had moved westward from their original home near Canadian Creek in what is now western Arkansas during the 1840s. In 1845 they founded Fort Gibson on the south bank of Muskogee River opposite modern day Altus. At that time Indian Territory was divided into two parts: Eastern and Western OKLAHOMA (the latter including present-day Altus). In 1857 Hugh Glass established a trading post at what is now Ferry Road near today's Kiamichi Dam which became one of the most important posts on the Santa Fe Trail due to its strategic location across river from Wichita Falls on Texas' Gulf Coast. By 1870 Fort Gibson had grown to include a school and garrison with up to 100 soldiers; however, by 1880 only 10 soldiers remained at Fort Gibson after it was abandoned by its US military occupants for lack of supplies. This abandonment followed a series of treaties negotiated between Native American groups and white settlers culminating in land cessions Augustus Fetterman received as part of Treaty No 4 following his successful resistance against Ulysses S Grant's attempt to drive him out of central Oklahoma during 1868-1869 war campaigns season—a campaign that also included Navajos under Cheyenne Chief Washakie Seelye….Today’s highways running through eastern OKLAHOMA center around these ancient sites: “Fort Gibson National Historic Site” just east off I-40 next to Guthrie Municipal Airport exits 12 & 14; “Wichita Falls Heritage Museum” adjacent northeast corner W Main St.; while Interstate 40 runs along side old Santa Fe Trail alignment just south of town limits….. One other site worth noting is nearby Tellico Hills State Park located off I-40 exit 169E just outside commercial areas….Oklahoma City has since taken over much importance as both its economic center and cultural heart but there remains plenty of evidence demonstrating why Oklahomans refer to their historic county seat as “Altuis” despite being less than one half mile away!

The town was named for Alcide Altus, an American general who fought in World War I and II. The town became home to a military airbase during World War II which served as a training ground for pilots of the Allied bomber forces. After the war ended, the base closed and most of its personnel moved away; however, some remain today and continue to use it as a tourist attraction. The current mayor is Donny Wilson with term beginning on January 1st 2020
The Altus area was first settled by the Kiowa, Comanche, and Kiowa-Arapaho in 1867. The town was established on a bluff overlooking the current city of Altus. The first post office opened in 1870. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of around 1,500. In 1935, Oklahoma State University relocated to Altus from Tulsa. The school's new campus required construction of a number of buildings including the original administration building and student union which are now part of theAltus City Hall complex. During World War II, Altus served as one of three main military training bases for the Army Air Forces in Oklahoma. It also hosted various aircraft manufacturing plants such as Convair and Piper Aircraft Company until they were transferred to Wichita Falls in Texas in 1948.
