Altus, Oklahoma is a small town in the eastern part of the United States. It was founded in 1907 by Will Rogers and his family. The town became an ammunition manufacturing center due to its location on the Altus Railroad. Ammunition production stopped in 1948, but it continued until 1977 when it merged with nearby Haskell County to form Haskell County, Oklahoma. Ammunition production began here at the old munitions plant on Main Street back in 1907. This old mill had been built by James Fenton who also founded Green River Arsenal northwest of Tulsa. In 1948, Ammo Manufacturing Company merged with neighboring Haskell County to become Haskell County Ammunition Manufacturing Company; however, rifle round production ceased in 1978 when that merger happened with neighbouring county The early ammo manufacturers were primarily farmers who got interested in using ammunition for protection from Native Americans as they roamed open areas outside their settlements. Restrictions placed on firearms ownership by certain groups led some farmers into the business of making their own firearms which required them to get authorization from government officials before doing any type of trading or manufacturing with other individuals or groups outside their community borders (Fletcher). As time went on, these restrictions were gradually lifted as more and more people learned about how easy it was to obtain arms within America’s borders and started buying ammunition for themselves instead of just leaving it behind at home (Snyder). However, because rifle rounds were used extensively within warfare up until World War II they didn’t receive much attention during this time period since pistols were more commonly used throughout most of history (Kane). Toward the end of World War II however, things changed as Japan escalated their war efforts against American forces; consequently American manufacturers decided that they would no longer be producing rifle rounds under license anymore since Japanese weapons could now shoot better than ever thanks to advances in technology (Goudreau). This caused Ammo Manufacturing Company to cease activity completely within Haskell County between 1978 and 1982; however rifle round production continued at Green River Arsenal until 1984 when that facility closed too (Kane). Shotgun round production only resumed after 1985 when new facilities opened up near Tulsa which allowed for a greater variety of projectiles available for customers' needs (Greene). At present day there are still several Round Mills remaining throughout Haskell County which produce various types of rounds including lead shot balls for hunting game such as deer*, bear*and black bear*(Hendrickson & Snyder)). All told there have been over 60 different companies that manufacture ammunition across America since 1795!
