In 1907, the town of Ada was organized from parts of the towns of Muskogee and Shawnee. The name "Ada" comes from an Apache word meaning "peace." The first post office in Ada opened on December 1, 1907. The town grew rapidly and by 1910 had a population of 2,000 people. In 1912 the state legislature declared that all cities in Haskell County were to be consolidated into one municipality and the name changed to Ada Municipal Corporation. On November 3rd 1920, Pearl Bailey became Mayor of Ada and served until her death on October 15th 1951. She was succeeded by Mrs Ralph Ladd who served until his death on September 10th 1970 In 1976, along with Muskogee City (the other city in Haskell County) and Shawnee City (the other city in Butler County), Ada merged into Tulsa Municipal Authority under mayor emeritus Lester Davenport effective January 1st 1977 A new water tower for Durant was completed in 1925 as part of a Works Progress Administration project In 1978-79 Riverview Elementary School closed due to financial difficulties experienced by its parent company Great Plains Dairy which collapsed when commodity prices went down . It reopened as Park View Elementary School later that year . On July 29th 2006 Wichita Eagle reporter James Southerland wrote about life at American Correctional Facility Shipley where he reported inmates were using their cells to make paper cups out of toilet paper
