Ada, Oklahoma is a small town in the east-central part of Oklahoma. The population was 1,849 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Ada County. The first post office in Ada was established on July 10, 1887. In 1907, Ada became an independent city and its first mayor was W.J. Hefner. In 1916, Ada became a county seat and had its own jail and coroner's office until 1959 when it merged with the county courthouse on US 66 to form one building which still stands today ( newly renovated ). Oklahoma statehood took place on November 16, 1907 with the creation of the new state of Oklahoma from parts of Texas and Kansas. On December 3, 1907, Adas citizens voted to annex their city limits to Oklahomasidee County for $2 per acre ($50 per thousand acres). The annexation process continued until 1915 when it was completed by vote of residents over mayor Hefner's objections as he desired remaining independence; however Ada would eventually become a part of OKC political boundaries through various annexation processes between 1910-1959 including but not limited to: being detached from Choctaw County in 1911 following a request by then Choctaw Mayor Harry Ladd because Adas feltChoctaw representation there would be preferential treatment underOKC government; rejoining McIntosh County after that county's dissolution due to financial problems caused by oil well production; becoming part of TulsaMetro area following merger proposal from Tulsa City Council member Jock Sutherland in 1966; finally becoming a part of OKC through petition drive from residents in 1978 when McKinley administration decided against splitting the city into two separate townships
Ada, Oklahoma was founded on November 17, 1867 by James E. Haskell and his wife Lottie. The town quickly grew due to its location at the mouth of the Arkansas River. By 1870, Ada had a population of 350 residents. In 1877, Ada became the capital of the new Oklahoma Territory. The city experienced rapid growth in the early years of its existence, with construction projects such as an oil well and a flour mill taking place throughout the decade. However, during World War II Ada's economy suffered as many military personnel moved to other cities in search of work. In 1959, after statehood was granted to Oklahoma, Ada lost much of its economic status due to changes in state government and poor economic conditions elsewhere in the territory.
