Jesuit Father François Xavier Cabaniss arrived in 1791 to proselytize among the Native Americans; he built a small fort on what is now State Street and named it Post Office Hill after his hometown of Paris (then part of Canada). The first permanent white settler was James Sibley who erected a log cabin on land that would become State Street in 1814; he sold it two years later to David Ballard who built a sawmill thereon. In 1825 John Paulding bought land adjacent to Sibley's mill from Ballard for $2 per acre (about US$ ); Paulding soon began tapping into natural gas reserves underlayed by limestone deposits near today's Old Buffalo Road/Highway 522 intersection. With this new source of income and access to transportation via stagecoach routes leading westward from Cincinnati—a distance then only 30 miles—Paulding formulated plans for development that included founding an industrial village called "Zanesville" but never completed them due to financial problems until 1862 when John Denny became governor of Ohio and directed him to do so. By 1863 Zanesville had 6 buildings including 2 churches (St. John's Episcopal Church & First Presbyterian) with over 100 residents; 4 businesses producing goods ranging from groceries to carpets; 7 families living in dwellings made out of logs or bricks heated by open fires during winter months served by 3 women servants known as "dames". The first post office operated here from December 1st 1826 through October 15th 1830 (#1); mail was delivered both ways between Cincinnati & Dayton daily except Sundays when service was suspended due during religious services which took place at various places around town: Trinity Methodist Church (current location), Second Congregationalist church (near Market Square), Hamilton Masonic Lodge #527 (& current location along Highways 522 & 22nd St.), Mount Zion Baptist church (& current location off Main Street east of Walnut Creek Road)), Queen's Chapel Female Seminary (now part of Case Western Reserve University) & Universalist Chapel which served as an academy for children up until 1861 when it became private school #406 taught by Miss Jane Boynton before becoming Mrs Frank Lloyd Wright’s kindergarten starting February 12th 1911 thru May 1919 located east side facing North Avenue just south side Of Elmira Rd.). In 1865 Union Army General Ulysses S Grant visited Zaneville while marching throughLucas County towards Vandalia reserve where he met General Oliver Otis Howard then stopped at Greenfield Tavern which still stands today across Highways 422nd&223rd Streets - definitely oneOftheirtime America’sMost Famous Restaurants! On January 14th 1866 Gov Denny ordered Samuel Morse To Build A Telegraph Line From ZaneVILLE ToOVER THE WILKESBORO RIVER FOR CONFEDERATE WAR EAGLES!
