Zanesville, Ohio is a city in Northwest Ohio, United States. The largest city within the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area and the second-largest city in the state of Ohio, it is located on the confluence of the Muskingum and Clermont Rivers. The population was 27,851 at the 2010 census. It lies just north of Lake Erie and east of Dayton. The area that would become Zanesville was first settled by Shawnee Indians in 1795; under American Indian rule it remained part of Creek Nation until 1813 when it became part of wider Union Territory following the Treaty of Ghent. At its peak as an agricultural center during the 19th century, Zanesville declined during American settlement after railroads arrived to connect Ohio with Kentucky and Illinois. However, new industrial development began in World War II with production from local shipyards for Alliesonic munitions and aircraft manufacturer Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (now Tyvek). In recent decades, Zanesville has undergone a rebirth as a center for higher education with several colleges including Muskingum University (founded in 1875), Butler University (established 1865), Wright State University (founded 1912), and Kent State University (founded 1932). More recently, Zanesville has also become home to several major retail shopping malls including Middletown Crossing mall and PNC Plaza. The name "Zaneesville" is mentioned for the first time on October 8th 1696 by Johnonezles Indians while hunting near what would later be called Middleburg Township in present-day Delaware County.[1] Settlers had called this area "Middletown Township." On January 10th 1800 Ulysses S. Grant's letter from President James Ketchum requests land grants from then Governor Nicholas Weahinger for three townships: Middletown Township west side alongthe Scioto River – now known as Ottawa Heights 、 Middleburg Township east side alongthe Scioto River 、and Tuscarawas Township north side alongthe Muskingunkegon River[2]. George Brown granted these townships to Samuel Hocking Jr., one day after he received government grant #553 from Ketchum.[3] Hocking named his township "Hockingstown" after himself[4]. The first documented settler in what would become Zanesville was Nicholas Weahinger who built a cabin on what is now Holmes Road south of occupied Middletown Township on November 12th 1799[5][6]. Weahinger purchased 5 rods or $20 total worth at auction at Knox County courthouse on December 16th 1800 from Ensign John Sibley who gave him four rods or $24 cash plus 4 shares or $32 worth at auctioned off goods valued at $184 total és laquelle change du tout à chacun pour faire rapidement un établissement fonctionnel de l’état de la ville et autres avantages en rapport aux habitants"[7]. Zanesville, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio on the west bank of the Little Miami River. The population was 19,651 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-most populous city in Ohio and one of its ten most populous cities. The first settlers in what is now Zanesville were Quakers who arrived in 1795 from Pennsylvania. They built their first sawmill on the west side of the river near present day Union Avenue and Riverside Drive. In 1800, they founded what became known as "the Township of Zanesville." The first post office was established here in 1811; it was called Harrison Station until 1830 when it changed its name to Zanesville after Major General Edward Braddock's victory over Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers (March 12, 1776). In 1817, John Zane purchased land east of town and erected a log cabin which he named "Harrison House" for his brother-in-law James Harrison. A gristmill was built by him on this site in 1819 and began operating that year; it continued to be used until 1862 when it was replaced by a larger mill located east of town on Deer Creek Road. John Zane's son Ezra also helped build what is now Union Avenue south of today's downtown core in 1824; he named it after his father-in-law George Washington Nicholas (Gwendolyn) Butler (1765–1839), owner and founder of Butler & Company lumberyard on North High Street between Third and Fourth Streets NW. In 1840, John Zane donated land adjacent to his home along Third Street NW to become an urban square which later became known as Union Square South. In 1851, Ezra died suddenly while out walking with his family; his wife Gwen took over management of their assets and businesses including their gristmill which continued operation until 1861 under her husband's ownership before passing away herself three years later at age 78%. Jenny Greenough ran unsuccessfully for mayoralty against incumbent Dutch Meyer during Cleveland’s mayoral election held November 3rd [1848] but won majority instead with 1123 cast ballots - more than any other candidate running for office that year aside from Van Buren who only garnered 472 votes out 511 cast.- Jenny Greenough served as Mayor from 1850 through 1860.- She had been born December 11th [1812?] or December 8th [1814?] according to records kept by Hervey Morrill
Zanesville was founded in 1792 by George Rogers Clark and is the oldest city in Ohio. The city was named after British general Sir James Zane, who explored the area in 1785. In 1802, Zanesville became the capital of Ohio and was home to the state Capitol from 1825 until it moved to Columbus in 1857.
