In 1837, Zanesville was founded by John Zanes and his family. The first post office was established in 1838. In 1860, the town had a population of 100 people and it grew to 222 people by 1870. By 1890, the population had increased to 513 people. In 1930, the town had a population of 1,500 people and it grew to 2,000 people by 1990. The current population is 2,063 residents.
Zanesville, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Luzerne County. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Luzerne County by population. As of July 1, 2020, Zanesville had an estimated population of 8,021 as part of the Cleveland-Akron-Middletown Combined Statistical Area. The Town of Zanesville was platted on May 12, 1811 by John Logan and James Robertson. The first post office was established in 1812. The name "Zanesville" likely derived from Indian Chief Zane's village near present-day Uniontown. On November 3, 1828 Bingham township [now Luzerne] became a part of what would become Zanesville when it was organized as part of a larger transaction that also included Perry Township and parts of Lawrence Township and Medina Township eastward to Mud Creek (now Delaware River). On February 20, 1830 Daniel Drake delivered land at what is now Easton Circle to Isaac Niles for $1 common GOLD CURRENCY . This donation helped make possible the erection in 1830 of First Congregational Church which remains standing today on Main Street cornering Hudson Avenue Aves., just south of where lots were sold for this development known as "Drake Square." In 1835 John Hutton donated land northeast cornering Washington Boulevard to form what would become Greenfield Square which served as home to many notable residents including physician Drs.-Lewis Cassius Clayborn and his son Sturgis Clapp Clapp; railroad executive Cornelius Vanderbilt; banker Salmon Peebles; industrialist George Westinghouse; architect Ebenezer Howard Beale (the father behind Beale Tower); business man Jethro Gibbs; politician Samuel Tilden; artist Winslow Homer etc.; all within less than three years following its incorporation into Zanesville with precincts meeting on various dates throughout March 25th thru April 2nd each year until finally adopting May 12th as their official day - January 2nd following US Presidential inauguration date! In 1865 Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased much needed real estate adjoining Greenfield Square from John Hutton for $10 per acre after winning an election against Generaloga Ford at Aliquippa creek near modern day Springboro PA & moved his family here permanently becoming one half owner & headman & founder/president/CEO Ewing Hopkins Air Force Base nearby beginning WWI serving heroically (&) dying controversially in 1945 having been accused by some (& still debated) thereof being responsible for starting World War I! Zanesville, Ohio is a small city located in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was founded on May 4, 1811 by Nicholas Zanes and his brother James Zanes. The name, or original spelling, for the city was Peoria. The first post office in Zanesville opened on October 15, 1814. As of the 2010 census, the population of Zanesville was 382 people. The majority of its residents are Baptists (98%). The history of Zanesville began with Nicholas and JamesZanes who arrived in 1796 from Englewood Township in Michigan Territory as part of a group that also included John Cranch and Solomon Dowling. They built a cabin near what is now downtown Zaneville on the Scioto Riverbank just east ofpresent-day Erie Boulevard and Stiles Road. In 1811 they erected a log courthouse which still stands today at 111 S Main Street - it served as the government center for many years until new buildings were constructed nearby includingthe State Capitol Building in 1913 and current School District Headquarters building next door on January 1stth 1959! In 1815 NicholasZanes married Rebecca Goodspeed (1812-1892) from Perrysburg Township in Delaware County – Rebecca’s parents were John Goodspeed (1768-1821) and Mary Sellers (1775-1847). They had three children: James Fenton (baptized December 17th 1816), Nathaniel Goodspeed (November 12th 1840), and Catharine Fenton (January 13th 1846). After Rebecca died childless around 1830Nicholas remarried but this marriage did not last long because he had two more children before his death in 1850: Susannah Jane Keyes(July 24th 1800-) who married Jesse Hilliard around 1830; then Anna Maria Keyes(May 11th 1832) who married John Wertheim about 1840! The key to understanding this early history is to note that most records for these families were destroyed when burned down during the American Civil War! After Nicholas’ death his widowbecca remarried July 25 th , 1850 to George Higginson . Thereafter most family members moved away from central Ohio so some limited research has been done into their lives & descendants still live here today
