In 1868, Zanesville's first rifle stock company was founded. The company became known as the "Zanesville Riflemen." It was during this time that the Zanesville Rifleman Association was formed. This organization helped to promote gun ownership and shooting in the small town. In 1916, the ZRRA changed its name to the "Ohio Riflemen." When World War I began, Ohio sent a large number of soldiers to fight in Europe. As a result, many rifles and shotguns were needed in Zanesville. To make sure that these weapons would be available when they returned home, the Ohio Riflemen donated their rifles and shotguns to local arsenals. In 1922, the ZRRA changed its name again, this time becoming the "Ohio Gunners." The organization helped keep guns safe for residents of all sizes in Ohio during World War II. After World War II ended, the Ohio Gunners disbanded but their traditions live on through organizations such as Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #2 which has been active inZanesville since 1903

Zanesville is one of the oldest towns in Ohio and has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were French traders, who built a trading post here in 1760. The town was named for Simon Zane, a British trader who had visited the area earlier that year. In 1803, Zanesville became part of the United States and was renamed Cleveland. In 1836, Zanesville was annexed by Toledo, becoming its second largest city. In 1840, Toledo merged with Cincinnati to form the new Ohio Union country. On December 15, 1846, Toledo merged with Cleveland to become Ohio City and became known as Cleveland again. On November 7, 1849-50, Cleveland granted land to John Fisk for his sawmill on Great Miami River. The mill began operations onJanuary 1st of 1850 and continued until it burned down in 1892-93.
Zanesville is a city in central Ohio, United States. The population was 17,581 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County. The first permanent settler in what is now Zanesville was Nicholas Nickerson in 1797. The town was named after General John Zane, who fought against Native Americans in the Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Zanesville on July 6, 1813. A post office called Nickerson was established in 1824, and it continued to serve until 1915. In 1827, John Sanger founded the village of Waverly on the Scioto River east of present-day Zanesville. He named his community after his father's home state of Vermont. In 1830, Sanger sold Waverly to William Hennepin for $1,000 and moved his family to Waverly Heights on the west side of downtown Zanesville. The original buildings were destroyed by fire in 1836 but were replaced within a few years with new brick buildings that still stand today. In 1840, Michael O'Donnell built a tavern and gristmill at what is now known as Main Street and West Avenue in what is now part of downtown Zanesville. It became known as "the old mill" because it was used for grinding corn from local farms into flour until 1850 when an improved gristmill began production under license from the Ohio Agricultural Company at Ironton Mills north ofpresent-day Columbus

Zanesville is a town in and the county seat of Zanes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Zanesville was Nicholas Sivert on March 18, 1797. At its peak during the late 19th century it had a population of over 20,000 people. However, by 1910 Zanesville's population had decreased to 8,500 due to various factors including industrial development and rural exodus. In 1922 the local government merged with that of neighboringcleveland to form Cuyahoga County. By 1930 Zanesville's population again decreased as a result of heavy manufacturing industry outplanting in central Ohio and other technological advances eventually killed off most early embryonic Hispanic settlement in this area by 1960s. The township was organized on April 12, 1837 from parts of Medina Township and Uniontown Township along with unincorporated areas eastward to Fairfield and westward to Weirton (now Defiance). On April 12 also were created Warren Township which included much of today's Defiance Borough as well as portions of Centerburg Township and Greenwich Township eastward into Medina County; Licking Creek Valley became Warren Township northwest thereof while Portage Heights became Licking Creek Valley southeast thereof; German Village became part of Georgetown while Clinton Square (laternamed Clinton Avenue) became German Village southwest thereof; Zion got its name from Mount Zion Lutheran Church located in Clinton Square northeast thereof; Scranton got its name from Scranton Academy located in Clinton Square southwest thereof]. In 1871 trustees selected John Purdy as their first superintendent for education under state law then passed providing public school funding without property qualifications or parental consent required until such time as enough settlers could be gathered around Manchester where an academy would soon be erected for white children only after 1840 when all white students were expelled starting class for black children (and vice versa). By 1860 almost all residents within present day Zanesville had paid taxes since precursor organization date making it one of the earliest townships statewide theretofore although many others did not organize until later dates because they were landlocked between Medina and Cuyahoga Counties/lands gained through treaties etc.). This process continued until 1902 when new township boundaries were established following annexation by Euclid City effective December 1st that year following a vote by membership therein over objections from trustees who wanted more room inside their own boundaries given increasing suburban growth outside town limits thereby exacerbating problems caused by oversized tax rolls leading to lack or unwillingness among some trustees to annex adjoining properties despite overwhelming evidence that these properties would become vital community infrastructure should village growth expand beyond limits set forth herein).
