Zanesville is a small town in northwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Zanesville is the county seat of Warren County and the second most populous city in that county after Cleveland. It has been called "the Athens of the West" for its large number of artists and scholars who traveled to study there during the 1800s. The first Europeans to visit what is now Zanesville were French traders in 1796, when they landed on the present-day East Coast of Ohio. They named it Point Defiance because of a Canadian fort they saw thereabouts. The first permanent settler in what would become Zanesville was Moses Valentine, who arrived in 1802. He built a cabin on land he had bought from an Indian chief and named it Valentine's Station. Two years later, Valentine married Anna Griggs, daughter of an American Revolutionary War veteran and settler Isaac Griggs. They moved to their new home near where the Wright brothers flew their first airplane on December 15, 1903 – christening it Dayton Airport (now Wright–Patterson Air Force Base). In 1819, John Tilton founded Tilton Ford Company which manufactured agricultural goods forivery to farmers across central Ohio and west Pennsylvania. When transportation became improved by horse-drawn wagons with runners along main roads rather than by stages through villages or farms as it had been before, Tilton began selling his products directly to farmers instead of through agents or middlemen like himself. Zanesville was founded by John Zanes in 1796. The town became a thriving center for trade and commerce, thanks to its location on the Great Miami River. In 1814, Zanesville was hit by a devastating fire that destroyed most of the town. Despite the loss, Zanesville continued to thrive as a commercial center and served as the capital of Ohio from 1815 to 1816.
