Zanesville, Ohio is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 12,812 at the 2010 census. In 1850, Zanesville was founded by General David S. Porter andphysician Dr. George Withers as a post office named for Porter's birthplace, "Zaneshville." In 1876, Zanesville became an incorporated city with a population of 14,000 people. At that time it was the largest city in Lucas County. In 1922, the United States Post Office Department moved its main headquarters from Washington D.C., to downtown Zanesville on Main Street to make way for the new Federal Building which would serve as the county courthouse and government buildings until 1971 when they were replaced by the present building on Fourth Street which also houses Zanesville's Fire Department and Police Department. On July 1st 1928 ZanesVILLE had its first lighted parkway- called Peralta Drive- running through downtown between State and Union Streets (now First Avenue). This parkway had three lanes each with a speed limit of 25 MPH during morning hours only; during afternoon hours it was divided into two lanes each with a speed limit of 30 MPH each; during evening hours it was single lane with a speed limit of 25 MPH only! It ran from Third Avenue South down State Street to Second Avenue North! In 1931 there were some changes made to our zoning ordinance which limited development in certain areas including commercial districts within one mile of school boundaries or within one half mile of any church or other religious institution unless used for farming purposes only (at that time all municipalities were agricultural!). This caused business owners in these areas to abandon their properties rather then face potential loss because they could not meet new zoning regulations without moving out!
