Zanesville is a city in, and the county seat of, Muskegon County, Ohio, United States. The population was 43,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo–Middletown–Saginaw Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known resident of what is now Zanesville was George Washington Carver. In 1814, General David Zane founded the town on land he had purchased from the Shawnee Indians. The name "Zanesville" was given to it by Captain John Zane while he led a force against them at Battle Creek in 1813. In 1824, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail built a post office in Zanesville after they sent a telegraph message from Cleveland to Independence Township in Michigan Territory. The first letter sent through this line was "Zaneshville." In 1830, John Fenton established a store near present-day Union Street and Court Avenue in what is now downtown Zanesville. He became an early settler and owned one of the earliest cotton plantations in Muskegon County. His plantation remains today as part of Muskegon Heights subdivision on . In 1835, Jonathan Dayton opened a millinery shop on Court Avenue between Meridian Street and Adams Street which became one of the largest flour mills east of the Appalachians until its closure in 1971. The first school district in Muskegon County was organized here in 1839 when three schools were erected: North Central (now Lucas), West Central (now Richland) and South Western (now Ottawa). This school system served all muskegon county except for parts of Wayne Township which joined neighboring Washtenaw County during Reconstruction years later; these areas are now part of Middletown Township or Toledo Township proper. One notable landmark associated with this time period is Woodward’s Mill which stood on an island within present-day Harbor Springs until destroyed by fire several years ago; it has been estimated that up to 20% – 30% –of all shafting done at Woodward’s Mill went into production at that site! Also during this time period two other large flour mills were established: Phelps & Whitney’s brick works across Main Street frompresent-day Union Terminal next door to First National Bank and northwest corner along Franklin Street between Highways 31st/12th Streets NW also known as “Old Towne”; this complex functioned as both an flour milling plant as well as manufacturing center for home furnishings such as china etc., eventually becoming defunct due to competition from more modern facilities over time and suburban development adjacent to Old Towne coreblocker Properties located just off I-75 exit #3A mile northeast (just southwest of downtown) Downtown business districts started emerging around 1900 with Erie Railroad yards located near Tenth Avenue SW between State Road 21st/ Cedar streets NW - still extant - Warehouse District starting about 1905 including current Wright automobile dealerships across Third AveSW also extant although much redevelopment has occurred recent years Warehouse District being represented today by Fourth Ave SW corridor stretching eastward past University Circle mall thence northwesterly along Elmhurst Blvd then northeasterly along Wellesley Rd until reaching Harrisonburg Rd southern border where Ravenna Rd begins; Parkland Dr continues generally parallel parkland beyond Harrisonburg Rd but does not reach Harrisonburg Rd

Zanesville was founded by George Zanes in 1811. The town was named for John Zanes, a Revolutionary War soldier and delegate from the militias of Northwest Ohio. Zanesville became a post-Revolutionary War center due to its location on the Great Lakes and its access to transportation. In 1824, the first gristmill in the area was built, and soon other businesses followed suit. By 1830, Zanesville had become one of the leading towns in Northwest Ohio. The town's growth continued during the 1800s and into the 1900s. A number of important industrialists moved to Zanesville during this time, including Amos Kendall, who founded Kendall & Henschel Company; Wm. Norris Phelps Jr., who co-founded Phelps Dodge Company; and Simeon Sherman Epstein, who founded The Sherwin-Williams Company. During this time, Zanesville also became known for its agricultural production which included corn and soybeans among others. During World War II, Zaneville played an important role in military activities as both a manufacturing community and supply depot. In 1948,zonesville experienced its first racial integration when black soldiers serving with The United States Army First African Infantry Battalion were assigned to live in nearby Lima Township while their units trained there. This event is considered to be significant within Northeast Ohio history because it marked the beginning of what would eventually be called "the American Civil Rights Movement." In recent years, some key changes have occurred within the town skyline including construction of new buildings such as Oneonta Dam (which replaced an earlier dam), updates to local governments' infrastructure plans (including fiber optic cables running through downtown), and increased development around Queen City Park which has seen increasing use as a recreational spot throughout the year. Overall, these changes have helped create a more diverse environment within Zaneville which has contributed to its current prosperity – something that many credit with helping make it one of Northeast Ohio's most popular tourist destinations today!
Zanesville was founded in 1796, becoming the county seat of Zanes County in 1827. The town was platted in 1824 by Simon Peter Zane and others under the name of "Zanesville." In 1830, it was renamed "Chardon" after Colonel Edward Chardon, a landowner. The first post office opened in 1834. In 1840, the town became part of the new Uniontown Township. On May 4, 1896, Zanesville became an incorporated city with a population of 382 people.
