It is the fourth-largest city in Lucas County, and the second-largest city in Summit County. The two cities are separated by Zanesville Lake. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Zanesville were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1798. A post office called "Zaneville" was established at this location on February 15, 1814, under the name of Fort Pittsburg Township. In 1837, it became part of newly formed Union Territory of Ohio, which included all of western Ohio except for parts of Cleveland and Cincinnati. The population had grown to over 12,000 by 1840 when it moved to its present location near what is now I-71/I-75 southbound and northbound exits 14 (Wrights Ferry Rd.) and 16 (Lake Erie Blvd.), east of downtown Zanesville. In 1920s Zanesville's economy was based on agriculture with mills manufacturing flour and other products such as paper products; however during World War II there was heavy industry including munitions plants and shipbuilding throughout most of downtown area as well as factories producing rubber hose and other materials for war production. After 1945 many jobs went away as industry shrunk or merged; but since 2000 Downtown has been slowly redeveloping with a mix of commercial use (the old L&M mill building being used mostly for offices), residential housing (which replaced some outgrown farming properties) as well as a new arts District complete with galleries, theaters, restaurants and nightlife venues It took until 21 March 2009 for ZanesVILLE to become one hundred percent funded through grant dollars from the state government - an event that underscored how much work still needs to be done despite recent economic development The area around downtown where light industrial once thrived has been largely abandoned since then although there have been mixed success stories One example is Higher Ground Brewing Company which opened up shop inside one former chemical plant earlier this year A more positive story came when Main Street Garden Center reopened after being vacant for years due to deteriorating conditions inside Another example is Dogpatch Pizza which leased space from Stroud Furniture & Rugs next door before opening up their own business Finally another mixed bag happened when Allstate Insurance moved into an old bank building on Sawmill Rd., closer to town center than their original site across town
Zanesville is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 41,611 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Zanesville was made by John and Mary Fenton on November 3, 1795. It was named for George Washington's birthplace of Mount Vernon. In 1814, General William Henry Harrison and his army passed through the area while raiding the Shawnee Nation and their villages along the Scioto River. One of General Harrison's aides-de-camp, Lt. Colonel James Wilkinson thought he saw a "large body of them [the Shawnees] lying flat on the earth with their scalps hang about their necks" so he ordered his men to stop and investigate. The discovery led to an American victory against Native Americans at Fallen Timbers near present day Zanesville. A post office called Fenton was established in 1821, and it moved to its present location in 1826 when Zanesville became a town under state law. In 1830, Daniel Kilpatrick built a log cabin on top of an old gristmill that had been abandoned for years nearby; this became Kilpatrick's home until his death in 1872. In 1840, David Wilkins opened what is now known as Wilkins' grocery store on Main Street in downtown Zanesville after opening one of the first stores west of the Appalachian Mountains. He later served as Mayor from 1889 to 1893 Wilkins Boulevard (now US Route 20) runs parallel to Main Street south of Interstate 80 across from Shaker Heights High School which dates back to 1870s The first electric light bulb used by people inside homes came wired into homes starting in 1888 by Wm Henson
