Zanesville, Ohio is a city of over 122,000 people located in the heart of the Great Lakes region. The city was founded in 1836 by Major John Zanes and named for him. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Zanesville and donated land to make way for a new town square. The new town square was built on the site of the current City Hall Annex building and it served as the temporary home of the City government from 1865 until it moved to its present location in 1990. Zanesville is an unincorporated community in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,523 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first European to discover and map the area that would become Zanesville was Captain John Fitch in 1795. He named it for his friend Zebulon Pike (1755-1829), a U.S. congressman from Tennessee who explored much of what is now Ohio and Kentucky before becoming a general in the American Revolutionary War and later a statesman under George Washington. The first settler in what is now Zanesville was David Zarley, who arrived on horseback in 1811 from Connecticut Township, Pennsylvania. Zarley built a log cabin on what became known as Indian Hill and soon afterward erected another cabin about one mile west on the same site which he called Village Green. In 1815 he married Rebecca Hoadly, daughter of Nicholas Hoadly of Lebanon Township, Ohio; they had six children: three sons and three daughters. About this time too there began to be several small sawmills around village green where gristmillstones were ground into flour for cooking purposes only—a practice still followed today by some people who live near downtown Zanesville’s mill buildings; these mills do not produce flour but instead provide Sunday morning entertainment with music and games for their customers from early morning until late afternoon or evening when services begin at the local church located just east of town center). In 1840 German immigrant Samuel Becker set up a gristmill about one mile southeast of Village Green on land that had been donated by Methodist Episcopal Bishop James Loyd (1796-1864). To meet increased demand for flour due to increasing Factory Act production in Great Britain and other areas of the world, Becker started marketing his product directly to consumers through print advertising as well as door-to-door salesmanship throughout central Ohio (the first such marketing campaign experimental by commercial enterprises). In 1847 Becker also acquired an adjacent lot north of his mill acres which he used to build two additional gristmills: One called North Star (later NorthStar Jr.) which produced high quality flour while the other known as South Star (later SouthStar Sr.). He died suddenly aged seventy-four years old on October 7th, 1849 after putting off surgery due to feverish symptoms since November 29th; his wife Rebecca took over running Mill operations until her death less than two weeks later at age seventy-six years old making her one hundred years old simultaneously – both women have been honored posthumously with state awards (). After Samuel Becker's death most machinery moved out onto new premises inside NorthStar Jr.'s abandoned mill complex consisting mostly of open air storage barns converted into heavy equipment sheds – these facilities remain extant today as part of the Town Heritage Museum complex redevelopment project initiated by Mayor Shawn Andrews during my administration) . His widow Rebecca continued farming household tasks such as planting crops outside their home during winter months while her son Nathan ranMill until 1861 when he also became employed at neighbor's established undertaker business () ; Nathan then soldMill operation back to family until 1865 when father Abraham bought it back (); Abraham kept it running until 1889 when it passed away [] . Zanesville was founded in 1811 by George Zane and named for Sir John Moore Zanes (1775-1837), an English general who fought in the Napoleonic Wars and later served as an American senator from Georgia. The first permanent settlers in what is now Zanesville were three men who arrived on horseback from Kentucky on October 21, 1811: Capt. Levi Stevenson, Samuel Prentice and James Hinton. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Maumee River about four miles upstream from where present day Zanesville stands. The first store was opened here by Captain Stevenson in 1812. In 1870, John Daugherty platted what is now downtown Zanesville and established one of the earliest businesses here – Daugherty & Sons Grain Mill which operated until 1907 when it went out of business. In 1907, local mills merged to form First National Bank which still operates today as one of Columbus' largest banks with more than $225 million in assets under management! A few years later that bank acquired The Trust Company of Ohio which became one of Columbus' largest financial institutions before merging with Nationwide Banks Incorporated to become Columbus Nationwide Financial Corporation (CNW) in 2008!
