In 1836, Zanesville was the site of a gunfight between two companies of the U.S. Fifth Cavalry and British forces. The battle was fought during the Second Seminole War and lasted for three days. In addition to the American killcount, casualties were also suffered by both sides: one soldier died from wounds received in action, and another was killed as he tried to flee the engagement.
Zanesville is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 36,534 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Lucas County and the second-largest in the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in what is now Zanesville was Captain John Smith on July 24, 1697. He named it "New Venice" after his ship foundered there on an attempt to explore Lake Erie. The town was founded by Peter Zane and his brother James Zane on November 12, 1811 when they surveyed land for a new town site on the eastern bank of the Maumee River. The brothers were assisted by their father, Nicholas Zane (1775–1847), who had bought 10 acres (40 hectares) of land from George Washington Lewis in 1802 and had built a cabin thereon. The settlement was moved from its original location to its present site on December 15, 1811 when Nicholas Zane sold part of his lot including current Fourth Street to Peter Zane for $100 ($ as of 2018). At first all but one family lived within two miles of each other; eventually that distance grew to five miles due to railroad development and population growth throughout central Ohio during the 19th century. In 1824 James Ainsworth donated 500 acres (2 km²) – or 3/4ths of what is now downtown – including most of today's Midland Avenue eastward from Canal Street so that people could live closer together without fear of being alone at night because no churches appeared then capable providing services suitable for large groups such as weddings or funerals with enough space for all attendees return home without fear of robbery or theft; this event has been called "Ainsworth's Village." In 1830 Nathan Bedford Forrest offered 5 cows and 100 acres (40 ha) near what is now Downtown for $10 per acre ($ as of 2018). This offer remains oneof America's earliest offers for agricultural land outside Appalachia which led directly to Forrest becoming America's leading cattle rancher thanks to his purchase at auction of 2 million head (more than 25% of U.S.)of rangeland northcentral Texas following Texas' annexation into Mexico in 1845 . When American Civil War began General Ulysses S Grant ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman not only not attack Mobile Bay but also keep up an appearance friendly towards northern Federal troops using deception techniques that included giving Union troops candy bars instead while Sherman burned numerous towns and villages as he marched through southern Georgia trying unsuccessfully[according to some sources]to break Atlanta against orders]; among these villages burned were: Gainesville, Decatur Ferry Landing, Rockdale Ferry Landing,[some sources say Athens], Milledgeville Ferry Landing,[some sources say Waterloo], Dunbar Bridge over Big Sandy Creek[Some Sources Say Athens] During Reconstruction white men were given homesteads Callaway Prairie southwest corner Third Street between Highways 22nd & 23rd Avenues west side White Oak Lane east side Clay Road northeast corner Third Street between Highways 22nd & 23rd Avenues southwest corner Seventh Avenue southeast corner Cedar Drive northwest corner Seventh Avenue White Oak Lane continuing east along Cedar Drive until it reaches Highland Park boundaries about four miles outside Highland Park According to some sources Gainesville may have become known as "Gainesville Junction" after this point because different roads lead away from it such as Old State Road 431 which leads northeast into Akron before turning southeast into Columbiana County - Gainesville Rd continued northeast under new ownership until it became I-71Z just west off I-71 near Toledo Airport then turned northwest again becoming old US 25 until reaching Scioto County boundary where it joined US 62 south before continuing south past Columbus

Zanesville, Ohio is a city in the Miami-Ohio Valley region of Northeastern Ohio. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. The area that now makes up Zanesville was part of the Northwest Territory along with present-day Delaware and West Virginia on November 3, 1781, when Pennsylvania took over control from Great Britain following its defeat in the American Revolutionary War. On July 4, 1800, by an act of Congress, all land east of the Allegheny Mountains became part of Toledo Township. In 1801, Zanesville was incorporated as a village and continued to be so until 1907 when it became a city under state law. In 1811 John Gurley developed what would become known as Gurley's Corners which were located on Zanesville's north side just east of High Street. This location eventually led to his ownership and operation of many businesses in town including a millinery store/shipping depot which still stands today and currently houses several residential units (the first being built in 1889), as well as two banks (the first one established in 1828) and two churches (one Congregationalist and one Baptist). Zanesville experienced some growth during its early years but slowed down after World War II due to wartime restrictions on downtown business activity which had a negative impact on local economies overall. However, since 2000s there has been significant redevelopment taking place with mixed results – most notably around First National Bank Plaza where much pre-existing retail space has been replaced by luxury apartments or office buildings while also ruining critical parkland acreage for future development; however this particular project is still ongoing despite opposition from locals who argue that high-rise apartments will destroy important historic architecture and facilities within their community
Zanesville was founded by two brothers, John and George Zanes. The original town was located on the south side of the River Zane, in what is now the city of Zanesville. In 1814, Ohio became a state, and the new state capital was moved to Columbus. The Zanesville post office was established in 1816, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first store in town was built onpresent day Market Street. Development of the present-day city began with the arrival of white settlers in 1836. The first courthouse was built at Third and State Streets in 1840. By 1865, there were over 100 residents living in Zanesville.
