They named their new community "Zanesville" after Duffield County seat Zane Township in neighboring Kentucky where they had come to live before moving to northern Ohio to start a new life. In 1881, General George Armstrong Custer died at the Battle Creek Ranch near present-day Springfield Township while leading an army column through southern Warren County on his way to battle against Sitting Bull inside Canada; Custer's death made him an international figure and helped spur development in centralWarren County which included much land that still exists today within city limits: portions of Dayton and Urbana townships as well as parts of Springboro and Lebanon townships are all located within city limits while other portions are administered separately as villages or townships. Many people who lived near where he fought came into contact with Indians during this time including George Stephenson who served as military governor for Warren County from 1880–1885; Stephenson negotiated peace treaties with several Native American nations including the Shawnees and Wyandots ceding large areas near modern day Springfield Township including what is now Wrightstown Heights Zanesville suffered greatly during World War II due to bombings raids conducted by United States Air Force forces known as "The Creature From Europe". Zanesville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the north bank of the Scioto River. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton-Zanesville metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Zanesville was Nicholas Lunsford, who arrived on May 10, 1796 and named it after his patron saint, St. Francis Xavier (1494-1553). In 1801, John Zane founded a sawmill and gristmill here which he along with others operated until 1827 when he sold them to James Fenton for $5,000 cash. In 1828 Fenton built the first frame house in what is now Zanesville and continued to operate mills and businesses until his death in 1845. After Fenton's death there were several ownership changes before final sale to David Wainwright in 1869 for $10,000 cash where he continued operations until 1924 when it was taken over by Averill Harriman's company as part of their Cleveland mill complex which lasted until 1978 when it closed down due to lack of customers or investment opportunities. That yearHarriman donated all assets including buildings and equipment to local educational foundation called University Village which continues to operate today as a museum/ research center providing education about village history since its founding in 1918 In 1927 Zaneesville had a population of 516 but by 1930 had fallen below 500 residents due primarily to economic factors such as leaving for better paying jobs elsewhere during the Great Depression while many small towns throughout Ohio lost both their textile production capacity and their people because they could not compete with larger cities like Cleveland or Cincinnati because those cities offered more job opportunities than smaller towns could provide even with limited resources like land or water capabilities In 1937 David Sayers opened Speedwell Cigar store at 4th & Market Streets becoming one of only two cigar stores open throughout much of America outside major metropolitan areas during that time That same year also happened an important event within village history as Representative George Caylor from Canton Township made an appearance here at a public meeting convened by Mayor Harry Loveman attended by other township officials to discuss waysvillage could improve its infrastructure including improving roads, bridges etcetera This meeting helped lay groundwork for future development after Caylor left office later that year In 1941 streetcars ran through town starting up near downtown then traveling south passing under US 24 toward Frankfort before turning east back out into town passing under US 23 near Gadsden Street before returning west reaching downtown just prior to sunset City services were provided via bus from nearby Warrensburg beginning around this time After World War II things changed significantly with many farms being turned into housing developments leading eventually towards current dayzanesville proper having a population over 10,000 again following significant growth thanks largely to highway construction projects culminating in present day single family homes being built on previously developed farmland forming some very large neighborhoods adjacent thereto
Zanesville was founded in 1797 by a group of Ohio pioneers. The town served as the capital of the Northwest Territory from 1800 to 1813 and then became the territorial capital of Ohio from 1815 to 1821. In 1825, Zanesville was renamed Cincinnati after Christopher Columbus, who had explored the area in 1492.
