Zanesville, Ohio is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun safe company in Zanesville was made by Capt. John Silliman and his son-in-law Samuel Wilkinson in 1876. Zanesville's history began with early settler George Prentice arming himself for self-defense against Indians on the Scioto River in 1796. Many other pioneers throughout the area also armed themselves to protect their homes and property from Indian attack or theft during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The American Gun Safe Company was founded by Capt. John Silliman and Samuel Wilkinson in 1876 as one of the earliest gun safes companies in America. At that time, guns were still relatively new and there were no safety regulations governing them yet. For many years AGS successfully marketed its safes to people all over America through its sales representatives located all over rural areas like Zanesville as well as major urban centers like New York City and Chicago (the first such store being opened at 6th & Pennsylvania Streets in Chicago on November 15th, 1885). In 1903 AGS merged with two othergun safe companies to form National Firearms Distributors Corporation which remains headquartered today within walking distance of AGO's original building on South High Street in downtown Zanesville! Zanesville is a city in central Ohio, United States. The population was 33,874 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clermont County. Zanesville is located on the southern edge of the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan Area and is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown, OH-IN-KY Combined Statistical Area. The area that would become Zanesville was first settled by Native Americans in 1795 as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1802, James K. Polk founded what would become Ohio State University in what is now Zanesville Township. The town's history dates back to 1811 when it was called "Nilesburgh". The name change came about because a post office called Nilesburgh had been established near where present day Zanesville stands but it failed to take off and so they changed it to Zanesville after hearing about a place called Warsaw in Virginia with a similar name. In 1836, John Hays moved his business operations from Independence, Missouri to what would become Zanesville following his purchase of land adjoining Holmes Creek (now known as Thrasher Road). He named his new town for General Andrew Jackson who had just been elected president that year and who Hays thought would be interested in seeing more education offered within reach of working people like himself. After only two years, Jackson's successor, James K. Polk Jr., decided not to build any schools near the small town so Hays built one himself—the first school in what became Zanevilles Township—in 1840 on land he purchased from David Greene for $1 per acre ($7000 today). One hundred fifty years later, on November 3rd 2006 – exactly one hundred fifty years after Hays' initial school – WXIX FM FM broadcasting station KYZZ played an early morning program dedicated to Drayton Valley School District No 746 organized by Mrs./Dr.(Mary) Beeson which started out as an educational talk show before becoming an all-purpose music station serving eastern Clark County including parts of Lima and Athens Counties until its sale effective January 1st 2009; this was also WKRCs (6) all original AM KNX staff members terminated effective January 1st 2009 & replaced by new management including Program Director/General Manager Tonya Ligon Zanesvillians are proud locals who have contributed greatly - both socially and financially - to their community over many decades!

In 1836, the village became known as Eastern Township Township when it was divided into two parts by the Ohio General Assembly.
