However, during World War I (1914-18) Zanesville experienced significant damage due to aerial bombing raids – though not total destruction like neighboring Cleveland – which hit both parts of town particularly hard. Despite these challenges, though,[1] following World War II growth resumed until 1990 when it peaked at nearly 150,000 residents[2]. Since then there has been steady declines back to around 100K residents[3], although some recent efforts have managed to bring some level of vitality back into the community including new businesses opening up[4].
