The first settler in present-day Zanesville was George White in 1796. Other early pioneers were John Hays and Israel Wellman. The township formed on March 1, 1800, from parts of Prehaska Township. Nathan Lyon donated land to establish a town site. A post office called Zanesville was established in 1814; its first president was Daniel Davenport. In 1836, the township's boundaries were amended by legislative act to include most of modern Muskingum County except for what is now Lebanon Heights and parts of Mentor and Warrensburg townships. The Main Street Bridge across the Scioto River near downtown opened in 1932 as part of an engineering project to improve access to local businesses and residences through that river crossing for pedestrians and motorists alike; it remains one of Ohio's oldest surviving bridges statewide . Today’s downtown had been built up around this same time as well as several other commercial districts while much lower levels remain unincorporated outside the bounds of downtown still using Ulysses S Grant Avenue which runs along its eastern border today as State Route 524

Zanesville is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. The first European settler in what is now Zanesville was Nicholas Morrill who came to the area in 1814. Morrill named his new settlement for General James Zane, a hero of the American Revolution and one of George Washington's commanders during that war. In 1824, Zane granted two parcels of land to John Dickey for his part in building the Miami and Erie Canal. Dickey turned over all but 640 acres (2 km²) of his holdings to Nathan Smith in 1830. With few exceptions, most of the townspeople who founded or operated businesses along the canal were men from outside the village or township they established along its banks. In 1836, John Hildebrandt bought 160 acres (62 hectares) east of downtown Zanesville from Dickey for $1 million dollars. He built a grist mill on this property which became known as Hildebrandt Mill because it ground flour for local families until 1945 when it was sold to Grundy Paper Company parent company Wm. Covington & Sons Incorporated and closed down after production stopped due to World War II shortages of paper products; however, parts remaining are still standing today as part of Grundy Parkz Place LLC which administers Hildebrandt Mill Ruins State Historic Site inside park boundaries). A portion of Hildebrandt Mill Road continues south into present day downtown Zanesville on what used to be their original equipment road; this section has been designated as part of Old Main Street by city officials through legislation enacted in 2006-2007 which also preserved much brick architecture associated with early mills dating back to before 1800s when corn cribs were built instead). In 1840-41 Daniel Webster campaign stopsted at Hare Tavern on Canfield Pike about 15 miles northwest then continued up Canfield Pike past present day Dayton where he crossed Delaware River near present day Wrightstown; he then traveled east pastpresent day Xenia and smaller settlements before arriving at what is now Zanesville on Sunday evening September 5th 1840 while campaigning against Andrew Jackson primarily because Jackson had recently signed an act authorizing slavery in Ohio Territory - this event helped produce Webster's famous "Fourteenth Amendment" speech later that year at Shakespeare's theater across town just westward along Main Street from current site Ofcourny Department store plaza - note: Both main streets adjoining canals thenceforward become West Main Street/Canal Walk between 1790-1920 whereas eastern side Streets became Euclid Avenue [now US 64] between 1920-1940 & west side Streets became First Avenue [now US 21] following purchase by Township authorities ceded by adjacent Village tractats prior thereto]. “Zanesville – America’s First Small Town” Fred Hutchinson Foundation history project grantee essay submitted Fall 2009
