Zanesville is a city in southeast Ohio, United States. The population was 25,751 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Zanes County. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Zanesville were two families from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1788. They named their land "Niles Township", after Nicholas Niles, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the Continental Congress. The town of Niles was platted on November 3, 1807 by General John Niles and his brother Elijah Niles with land that includes present-day Zanesville and parts of Lancaster County. The name originated from the fact that it lay along a branch of the Erie Canal which connected Great Britain with America; people in this area were called "Nilers" because they worked on the canal project. A post office was established at Niles on December 11, 1807; it changed its name to Zanesville on January 6, 1828 due to growth within the township and within one year had become part of Warren County. In 1830–1831 Zanesville became an unorganized community when Warren and Muskingum Counties merged into Ross County under President Andrew Johnson's Executive Order No. 2 (dated February 19, 1830). At that time it was located in western Muskingum County proper but east of where Ross now stands. In 1836–1837 Nathan Bedford Forrest conducted a survey for Ulysses S Grant as part of his plan for annexing portions of Kentucky to form new states during Reconstruction – including what is now eastern Ohio – and discovered what would eventually be known as Zane's Creek valley near present-day downtown Zaneville while mapping out Grant's proposed territory for Kentucky colonization purposes. Upon learning about this discovery he renamed his planned community "Fortressburg" after Fort Donelson outside Nashville (now Knoxville), Tennessee Territory then under Union control as part of territories acquired during the American Civil War because Fort Donelson had been abandoned by Confederate forces following their defeat at siege ativerts Lieutenant Colonel James Kenedy on April 12th 1865 (see Battle Of Fort Donelson). The city hosted the 1904 Democratic National Convention and also played host to the 1938 and 1952 Republican National Conventions.
