Zanesville, Ohio is known as the birthplace of the first self-loading rifle in 1836. The Rifle Company of America was founded here in 1836 by a group of men led by Colonel John Ziegler. The company's first rifle was a model called the "Fiscal" which fired a metal ball with a feathered impaling head.
Zanesville, Ohio is a small town in central Ohio, located about 20 miles west of Cleveland on the Scioto River. The population was 7,574 at the 2010 census. Zanesville is part of Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Zanesville were French traders and missionaries in the mid-1700s. They named it Baie des Sioux for its location on the mouth of the Scioto River near modern day Uniontown and Clearwater. In 1814, landowner Anthony Wayne acquired 1,000 acres (500 hectares) of land southeast of present-day Zanesville from John Barber. He named it after his father, Sir Anthony Wayne (1685–1749). In 1826, he donated 3 square miles (7 km2), or 11% of his total holdings in what are now Zanesville and Uniontown Township to the township trustees for use as a town center. The first store in what is today Zanesville opened in 1827 on State Road 5 near where current Main Street meets US Highway 21A. A post office was established here in 1830 and became known as "Wayne". In 1835, he donated another square mile (7 km2), or 16%, of his holdings to the township trustees for use as a village center. The first school was built here in 1840 by Rev. Nathaniel Fenton; it became known as "Fenton's School". Zanesvillians called their new town "Natchez" because General Nathan Bedford Forrest visited this area during the American Civil War and imparted lessons about guerrilla warfare to Confederate forces marching through central Ohio en route to Cincinnati before invading Kentucky that fall. Afterward, General Forrest distributed military supplies through Camp Nelson northwest of Neyland Heights east of Dayton while operations continued southwest along I-75 into Kentucky across wormwood creek bridge over Boyd Fork until they reached Louisville – one day after General George Crook's army crossed Boyd Fork at White Sands Bridge over Wormwood Creek just outside present-day Cincinnati – reaching Nashville within days instead! local residents returned home only long enough to build fences around their homes before retreating back into their villages again! Some men remaining with General Forrest northeast beyond Raymond Mill learned how to operate an artillery piece which they brought back with them when they encountered Federal forces marching south from Lebanon – thus Dalton County's only battle fought during the war! Presidents Washington Polk & Franklin D Roosevelt were born here: Harding (1921), Coolidge (1925), Hoover (1929). After years spent being marketed as a potential site for a railroad line connecting Toledo via Cleveland with points farther south due east via Akron & Mahoning Valley - all rejected by various directors - Anthony Wayne reopened negotiations with various railways interests starting c 1870 but no agreements were reached; finally Congress created US Railroads Administration under President Ulysses S Grant which purchased all US railroads bankrupted or leases ended except Erie Railway Company which leased Central Railroad System from competing UP builder Rahway NJ) On January 24th 1902Anthony Wayne passed away leaving his entire estate consisting mostly agricultural land scattered throughout western OH include 2 townships Vandalia & Clinton Twp also portions Of Ottawa Co Recovered From Miami Indians} By 1913 Anthony Wayne has been buried at Green Lawn Cemetery situated approximately 4 miles due south east corner OF Old National Pike South WestOf former New York Mills Lumber Yard Now used As Recreation Ground)ZanesVILLE

Zanesville is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. The first permanent European settler in Zanesville was Nicholas Kline. He arrived on July 12, 1814 and erected the first log cabin in what is now Zanesville. The town was named for Zane Grey, an English author who settled in the area in 1800. The post office at Zanesville was established on November 15, 1817, by Joshua Hite and remained open until it closed on December 5 of that year due to the Indian Removal Act of 1830. It had been platted by Nathan Bedford Forrest and others as part of his land grant to Indians granted under the Treaty of Green Brier Creek (1819). On January 20, 1835, John Martin purchased from Forrest a tract of land comprising present-day parts of Zanesville and other townships in Lucas County. Upon receiving this purchase he changed its name to "Zanevill". In 1841 John A. Moore added another township to form modern day Trumbull Township., west of downtown Zanesville proper. In 1870s an oil well were drilled east off route 6 just south of town limits into what is now Beechwood Parkland State Park but no wells were ever tapped because there wasn't enough water available then or even now when it comes to fracking operations
Zanesville is located in the southwestern corner of Ohio, on the border of Indiana and Michigan. It was first settled by families who arrived in 1814. The town was named for Zanesville, West Virginia. In 1868, Zanesville became a city.
