Zanesville is a city in northwest Ohio, United States. The population was 21,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wood County. The first settlement in what is now Zanesville was made on July 16, 1796 by John Zane and others when they wagoned into the area from Kentucky to find land for their new home. The town was named after George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon. In 1801, Zanesville became part of the Indiana Territory and in 1803 it became part of Ohio Territory due to its location on the Great Miami River. On March 15, 1805, Zanesville was granted a charter by President James K. Polk as a village under the name of "Zaneesville". In 1830, General David Potter set up military headquarters at what is now known as Potter's Hill (now occupied by McMicken College). He named his post "Potter's Hill" because he had received orders from President Jackson to establish a military post along the then-undeveloped Northwest Side of Columbus. The hill continued to be called that until 1862 when it changed its name to "Potter's Hill Park" in honor of Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest who had Confederate forces captured White House Heights during the American Civil War and renamed it Fort Donelson after his victory over Union forces there at November 12th1862. In 1863 Vinton Butler moved his family from Xenia, Ohio to Clearwater Township in Wood County so they could get away from anti- abolitionist sentiment running rampant through much of America at that time. When Butler learned about an attack on an Anti-Slavery meeting held in Zanesville two years earlier he organized an expedition against the protesters which resulted in several deaths including one young girl; this event helped solidify support for Union cause among many local residents who were not yet ready to break with their southern friends and families just yet immediately following emancipation date events nationally across most parts of America during that time frame both politically and socially especially given clear evidence free black people living within white society opposed all forms discrimination regardless color or social class status quo while some subset thereof did indeed actively participate & coordinate efforts w/ Tuskegee Airmen air raid mission docked offshore Pensacola FLwaterside Landing being main targets gulfport Alabama USA during early 20th century

Today, much of downtown Zanesville remains unchanged from its early days; most notable among these are the restored structures that serve as headquarters for the Lucas County government (such as the old jail), State Fairgrounds (now home to multiple events each year including music festivals and trade shows), and various other commercial businesses located along EAST Main Street between Second and Third Streets – all addresses still current on City Hall Nicollet Place map with street numbers beginning at 5th Street NW . In 1813, the United States government established the county of Lucas County, Ohio, which included part of present-day Zanesville. The township of Zanesville was organized in 1824 and named for General John Bolling Zane, who served as commander in the Mexican War and as secretary of war under President James K. Polk. The first store in Zanesville opened its doors on Main Street in 1827. By 1830, the population had reached 1,500 people and it began to prosper due to its location close to major transportation routes and its access to resources such as timber and water resources. In 1839, a new courthouse was built in downtown Zanesville and it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the community today. This courthouse helped contribute toZanesville's growth as an important regional center during the late 19th century. In 1851, construction began on what is now known as Banks Place – one of downtownZanesVILLE's original commercial districts – which became an important cultural destination for residents throughout the years. During this time period, entertainment venues such asthe theatre (first built in 1847),infirmary (1848),and post office (1855) were also constructed within walking distance of each other."
