Zanesville is a small town located in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by General John Zanes and his brother-in-law James Winchester as a trading post on the Great Miami River. In 1827, Zanesville became the county seat of Franklin County and remained that way until 1912 when it became the capital of Ohio. According to the 2010 census, Zanesville has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. The remaining .1% consists of undeveloped land. The township contains two public schools: North Central High School and Mount Zion Christian School. The first person to settle in what is now Zanesville was Captain George Rogers Clark who arrived there with his family in 1795 while exploring the area for new territory for Virginia under British rule.
