Zanesville, Ohio is a city in southwestern Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 43,651 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1796 by General Nathan Zanes and named for him. The first store in town was built by Capt. John Zanes on State Street. In 1801, General David Coffee established a post office near present-day downtown Zanesville with the name Brownsville. The first school in town was built on what is now First Avenue and High Street in 1802.
