In addition to its economy, Youngstown has a rich history dating back to 1813 when it was part of Virginia Township. Today's downtown area was built on land that once consisted of more than 100 villages and settlements. The first inhabitants of what is now Youngstown were Native Americans who hunted game near present day Wooster and other areas within what are now Mahoning County. By 1792 European traders had arrived in what is now Youngstown from Pittsburgh with plans to trade goods with the native nations along the Great Lakes region. One such trader was Peter Stuyvesant who founded New York City’s first commercial settlement in 1795 at present day Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (now Pittston). With initial success, he soon realized that trading posts would be necessary for his ventures as transportation became available overland from Europe across North America rather than by sea. He erected his first post on Long Island Sound in 1796 before moving his operations ashore into what today is Mahoning County where he founded a small town named Stuyvesantville after himself – an event still celebrated annually by locals as “Peterstown Day” or simply “Pete’s Day”. On November 5th, 1814 Colonel George Washington led an army against British General John Burgoyne at Saratoga which resulted in massive American victory resulting in independence for America from Great Britain; this event known as "the Battle of Saratoga" helped spur development around here during the 19th century[1] Following independence there were several waves of immigrants arriving here beginning with German Protestants fleeing revolutionary Germany during the Napoleonic Wars while others came primarily from Ireland (especially Clarenagh) during times of economic boom following England's partitioning of Ireland into Catholic and Protestant territories [2]. Consequently various cultures mixed together creating a unique melting pot culture which continues today through various culinary items found throughout Greater Cleveland - think hot dogs or pizza! However despite all these diversity early residents did not hesitate to join forces to form local organizations like local militia units or Rotary clubs serving their respective purposes even if they did not always agree politically or culturally with each other[3]. In 1815 William Voegelin formed a cotton ginnery on current day Arlington Heights Road adjacent to what is now Union Station; this business later became known asVoegelin & Sons Laundry fame for its high quality laundry products until it closed its doors in 1967 due largely to lack of competition within this rapidly changing industry[4]; however VOEGELIN STORE IN YOKOHAMA still stands rent free inside Japan's largest shopping mall! Additionally prior to Potters Field Avenue becoming famous as Main Street back when it only ran northeasterly from Wooster southward some progress was made here too; see below... Finally starting around 1830 Lockwood Manufacturing Company began making shoes outfitting frontier farmers called “Lockwood Shoes” which continued until 1865 when demand went up instead so manufacturing moved overseas[5] . This particular story could go on forever but suffice it say that although things change quickly within our community we continue TO MAIN STREET!
