Youngstown, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 29,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The name "Youngstown" is derived from an Shawnee word meaning "the place where goods were brought." In 1831, John Cranch became the first white settler in Youngstown when he and his family arrived on a ship from Philadelphia with three cows and one horse. Downtown Youngstown was founded as a village in 1827 by Simon Cameron, who named it after himself and his son-in-law, Peter Jennings.[1] The town's first store opened in 1830 and soon developed into a thriving commercial center with schools, churches, hospitals and other public buildings. By 1840, Youngstown had become an important manufacturing center for soapstone products and machinery; it also became a popular destination for travelers because of its scenic hills and riverfronts. In 1849–50, during the American Civil War, Youngstowns industrial production helped contribute to Union victory over Confederate forces. After the war ended, businesses returned to their prewar levels while crime rates decreased; however, economic decline followed in subsequent decades until young people abandoned downtown during the 1970s–1980s Rust Belt migration to new housing developments elsewhere in central Ohio. Today's downtown contains many surviving examples of Old World architecture from that era: brick buildings dating back to 1827 (the old City Hall), two clock towers built between 1915 and 1917 (one still working), plus numerous other notable landmarks dating back to this period including the State House (1830), First National Bank Building (1909), Commodore Perry Statue (1887) and Quaker Meeting House (1796). Additionally,[2] there are several dozen small businesses operating within walking distance of downtown or along Route 422 which continue to thrive despite difficult economic times.
In 1812, Youngstown was founded by Gabriel Fenton and others as a small village on the Scioto River. It became an important political center during the 19th century as a result of its status as the county seat of Holmes County. The city was acquired by the United States in 1836, becoming an incorporated town within the country. In 1941, Youngstown was destroyed in a natural disaster that killed more than 200 people.
