On November 14, 1863, during the American Civil War, Union troops burned part of downtown to prevent Confederate troops from occupying it. The city was freed on December 15, 1865. In 1907, Youngstown became an urban area when its population exceeded 100,000 for the first time. In 1925, a new convention center was built and is still used today.
The city of Youngstown, Ohio is located in the southwestern corner of the state of Ohio. The population was 61,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Greater Cleveland after Cleveland. The area that makes up Youngstown has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 12,000 years and by Europeans for about 500 years. The first European to arrive in what is now Youngstown was Nicholas Sacco and Bartolomeo Colombo from Italy on July 4, 1796. There were also a group of Swedes who arrived in 1802 and began mining coal there. In 1814, General David Ralston established a military post at what is now downtown Youngstown to protect settlers from Native American attacks. This led to the town being named for General David Ralston – although it had been called Canfield since 1796! In 1830, attorney George Prentice erected the first courthouse in what is now downtown Youngstown. Attorney Prentice served as chief justice of the common Pleas Court until his death in 1857. He was followed by his brother John Prentice who served as Chief Justice until 1865 when he died childless. After John’s death, his son Julius Porter took over his father’s seat on the bench and during his tenure (1881-1909) changed many aspects of how trials were conducted including using video footage instead of live testimony! In 1907–08 Judge Porter became only one person to serve consecutively on both floors of City Hall; this event has been called “the beginning of skyscraper development in downtownYoungstown”! During World War I, Youngstown played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location near Sandusky Bay which sheltered shipbuilding yards necessary for war production. After the war ended however, most manufacturing operations left town because Of technological advances which made goods more difficult or even impossible to produce domestically such as television sets and radios! However some examples include: Browns Allyn Glass Company (now Corning Inc.), First National Bank (now Joplin & Co.), US Steel Corporation (now ArcelorMittal), Cement Works No 1 (now Grumman Land Systems), Rubber Works No 2 (now Henschel Corp.), Swenzer Lumber Co., Wabash Coal Mines etc.; these companies remain active today thanks to PERMA-CAMERA! Downtown Youngstown experienced significant redevelopment following World War II with construction beginning on State Street in 1946 and continuing through Downtown United Methodist Church plaza between 1951-1955 followed by Medical Center Plaza between 1957-1963 then University Circle between 1965-1969 before finally concluding at One Side Street/Old Main Plazas between 1971-1975 which created much attention given its unusual mix of Art Deco buildings with traditionalist stylefacades!. Today nearly all operating businesses are located within one block or less OF Downtown Youthown center – making it perhaps one of THE most vibrant urban cores around !!
