Youngstown, Ohio is a city in the United States located in the southern part of the state of Ohio. The population was 66,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mahoning County. The first permanent settler in what is now Youngstown was Nicholas Hennepin in 1800. The area that would become Youngstown was laid out as part of the Northwest Territory under the government of Great Britain. On July 3, 1821, after Mexico won its independence from Spain, Ohio became a United States territory and on October 10th, 1825 Nicknamed "The Granite State" by President James K. Polk because of its large deposits of granite mining resources, Youngstown became a town within Ulysses S Grant's provisional government for WesternOhio region. In 1837 it was made an incorporated village and adopted a form of public school education which continues to this day as Municipal Schools School District No 1 (now Mahoning County). In January 1865 Union General David Ewell Sherman destroyed most everything eastward along Perry Road including all but one small community called Westtown - leaving behind only Youngstown as his winter retreat during Big Week operations against Confederate General Robert E Lee and his army near Cincinnati. During Sherman's occupation some 400 homes were burned down; many others had to be rebuilt following his raid and destruction. As retribution for Sherman's actions Mayor John Phelan ordered new streetlights installed throughout town to deter future vandalism by Sherman's troops while also purchasing new lamps which will still be used today in downtown areas such as Second Street between Proctor Street and Spring Garden Avenue/Route 2A) On December 8th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant published an order granting amnesty to all men captured or killed during Big Week operations near Cincinnati who had not yet been tried or executed according to military procedure at that time since pardons could not be given until after war ended--a decree known as "The emancipation proclamation". This event helped spur several thousand unemployed miners into returning home before peace returned to America with Reconstructionbeginning later that year. This event also helped solidify local support for Abraham Lincoln when he ran for president in November 1860 against John C Fremont--winning narrowly despite suffering numerous defeats across much of Midwestern America due largely to Lincoln's unpopularity due to tariffs placed on imported goods brought over from England by Republican Secretary Chase Woodbury Bloomfield--the man generally credited with starting the American Civil War (Lincoln did not gain election until two years later). Since then various businesses have been built Downtown including One Financial Plaza which opened on May 25th 2006 adjacent to Reston Park Zoo and just steps away from Riverfront Stadium giving it close proximity bothto shoppers & visitors alike
On November 3, 1795, the first permanent settlement in what is now Youngstown was founded by George Washington and his family. The town was named after Colonel John Young of the Continental Army. In 1814, the Ohio General Assembly authorized the organization of a new township in what is now Youngstown. The town was incorporated on January 24, 1823. On July 1, 1827, it became a part of the newly created Cincinnati-Youngstown-Muncie region. During its early years, Youngstown had a population of around 10 residents per square mile. By 1830, however, the population had grown to over 120 residents per square mile. In 1832 and 1833 there were major floods that destroyed many homes and businesses in and around Youngstown. These events helped to impetus development in the area and led to an increase in business activity as investors sought relief from damage caused by flooding. In 1850, land east of Market Street was purchased from Native American leader Tecumseh for $2 million dollars which madeYoungstown one of the most valuable townships in Ohio at that time. This land included much of what is now downtown and several neighborhoods including North Side Gothic which developed during this time period as a result of heavy investment by entrepreneurs such as Abram Hewitt and John D’Augelli
