The Xenia, Ohio community has been located in the area now known as Xenia for over 200 years. The first European to settle in this area was James K. Polk, who arrived in 1836. He named the community after his sister Xenia, born in 1811 in Russia. Xenia originally consisted of a few log homes and a store. In 1850, Lucius Niles bought land here and built a large brick home which he called "Nile's House." The town grew rapidly from this point on and by 1870 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1881, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act authorizing the erection of a new courthouse within three miles of Xenia. This new courthouse was completed in 1885 and it soon became one of the most popular local buildings in Xenia. It is still used today as a municipal building. The xenial community experienced many milestones during its history including becoming the site of Ohio's first agricultural fair (1893), being named winner of the state's Most Valuable City Award (1912), hosting America's first international rodeo ("Rodeo '92") (1992), and being named winner of the prestigious Stroud Award for excellence in public service (1997). These events helped make Xenia one of central Ohio’s top tourist destinations today.
