In 1902, Xenia acquired a municipal charter which granted it full civic autonomy; this event marked an important milestone in the city's history as it began developing into an incubator for contemporary progressive ideas. Throughout much of the 20th century, Xenia enjoyed relatively stable economic conditions thanks to its proximity to downtown Cleveland and its role as one of Ohio's major transportation hubs; however, following World War II (1939-1945), xenophobic violence surfaced in some parts of the city which led to decreases in business activity and overall social unrest. Following decades of continuous redevelopment effort by city leaders and private developers alike - culminating in construction of two massive new malls within downtown – xenophobic vandalism has again become an issue facing Xenian society today.
