There have been chokes on firearms for centuries. In Xenia, Ohio, a noted gun historian named John A. Flinn researched and compiled an extensive collection of choke devices and their history in his book “Gun Chokes: A History of Firearms Choke Devices” (CRC Press, 1984). One of the earliest known choke devices was the “ Turkish Bullet” which consisted of a small round projectile inserted into a muzzle-loader. When fired, the round caused air to be forced out of the barrel by compression and expansion within the stock. This created a vacuum that prevented gas from escaping and ignited the powder in the cartridge. A second type of Turkish Bullet was used by American soldiers during World War I with modifications made to fit British rifle barrels. The United States military utilized two types of Turkish Bullets – one which caused gases to escape from either end of the tube while another imprisoned them within receiver grooves on both calibers (1914 Military & Civil Catalogues, Smithsonian Institution) . In 1892, George Washington Carver patented an improved version of what is now known as carpenter’s knots or trigger cocking devices. These were designed to prevent accidental firing by binding rounds together so that they could not be fired at will without being cocked first (Carver Papers #E9-10). Trigger cocking devices became common among civilians after World War I when guns became more reliable and easier to operate than before. Some firearms manufacturers also began marketing pistols with trigger cocking devices built into them as protection against accidental fire (Flinn 1980). The next major development in firearm choke technology came about in 1922 when inventor Cyrus McCormick developed what is now called a shotgun choke device. The shotgun choke device consisted of a metal mesh screen placed over the barrel breech area prior to loading it with rounds (McCormick 1923). This prevented rounds from passing through the muzzle where they would detonate prematurely inside the weapon or cause damage to surrounding ammunition Storage containers were also fitted with shotguns having shotgun chokes beginning in 1924(Harrison 1932). Shotgun chokes remained popular until about 1938 when handgun chokes became more common(Flinn 1980). The late 1800s saw significant progress being made in firearm choking technology such as shotgun chokes developed by Cyrus McCormick in 1922 which allowed handguns to be fired without accidentally hitting someone else

In 1851, John Witherspoon donated land to build a school; the first building was erected on what is now Main Street. The present school building—the second one built—was completed in 1912 and has been used as a library since that time. In 1907, local farmer George Prentice donated land for a city park; this park remains today as the core of Xenia's downtown district. In 1923, xenophile photographer Edwin Hirsch took his famous Photographs from Euclid Avenue which are now displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art along with many other items from his collection including negatives and prints
