The tornado remains one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. Xenia experienced another major disaster in 1903 when a powerful earthquake rocked the area causing extensive damage to both physical and economic structures including many homes and businesses. The event remains one of Xenia's most troubling memory moments due to its destructive power and potential for further harm should it happen again. Xenia has seen many through its years since becoming an unincorporated community: several mayors (including two who served terms totaling three years), two congressmen (Ulysses S. Grant Jr., James Meeks), two justices on the United States Supreme Court (John Marshall Harlan II and Oliver Wendell Holmes III), three governors (John Kasich, Ted Strickland, Rick Snyder) as well as numerous business moguls like Mortimer Westheimer and Cyrus Vance Sr.–all withstood challenges or overcame difficult odds to make their mark on American life or culture during what some would call "the Good Old Days."
