In 1821, James Wahlgren purchased property and built a gristmill on the village's current site. Wahlgren was one of the first white men to live in what is now Xenia and he also served as its mayor from 1825 until his death in 1828. In 1830, local farmers founded the first school in Xenia which soon became popular among their children. By 1840, xenialand had been organized with a post office and three stores. That year saw significant growth for xenialand when John Haggerty moved to Xenia from Greencastle, Indiana to open a grocery store called The Hawkeye on Main Street. He soon began importing goods from eastern Europe which led to increased business for his store and also helped fueling xenialand's rapid growth during this time period Xenia experienced its greatest prosperity during Reconstruction Period (1865-1913). This time period saw widespread social changes across America as African Americans were granted full civil rights following the American Revolution and then gain access to education, jobs and housing that they never had before. As a result of these changes, xenialand grew economically and became known as a " melting pot" community where people of all races mixed together while maintaining their individuality In 1901, xenialand incorporated as a city under the name Xenia Heights A major event that took place during this time period was when many African Americans who were freed by President Abraham Lincoln after serving in Confederate States Army were given land east of Zenit Avenue near Riverside Cemetery This area would later become known as Black Bridge Park Xenian women played an important role during this time period with some becoming mayors or high ranking officials within their respective cities . One such woman was Mrs . Addie Ann Willis who served as mayor of Xenium from 1897 until her death in 1916 . Willis spearheaded legislation which allowed female citizens to vote , serve on city councils and hold other positions within their municipalities
