Worthington is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,907 at the 2010 census. The name "Worthington" originated from the Indian word wurthin (a place where Pocahontas lived), which means "the place of cover." The first settler in what is now Worthington was James Worthington, who arrived in 1800. He built a log cabin on the east side of present-day Route 66 and named it "Worthington". In 1814, George Washington Carver came through the area, and he called the village "Carver's Landing". In 1827, John Dickey founded a trading post at Carver's Landing. Dickey named his community "Dickeyville", after himself. By 1830, all of Stark County had been organized into three towns: Carverville, Dayton Township, and Worthington. This arrangement lasted until 1837 when Dayton Township split off to form its own town government. In 1840, Wm. Hargrave moved to Worthington from Cuyahoga Falls and began to operate a flour mill. That same year also saw the founding of the first school in Stark County – an academy known as Mount Zion Female Academy – by Jno. Fenton (1801-1872). A year later subscription money enabled him to purchase land for that purpose on which he erected a two-story brick building dating back to 1842 that served as both schoolhouse and meeting hall until 1865 when it was replaced by a new structure built using bricks imported from New York City that serves as First Baptist Church today. During this time period there were other important developments including construction of dam across Big Branch River near present day Portsmouth and establishment of Forest Park 192 feet below mean sea level on upland along with numerous stores and residences around village center including original store frontage still evident today on west side Main Street running northwest to southeast corner lot marked by white picket fence line then backed up against limestone quarry wall & road leading north
