A group of citizens banded together and fought back against this accusation; they later renamed themselves the Republican Party and ran Kapp for Congress in 1840 without success. Worthington is a small town in western Ohio, on the border of Butler and Lucas counties. The population was 5,827 at the 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Worthington was John Worthington, who came to the area in 1811. He built a cabin near present-day downtown Worthington. Other early settlers were James Hargrave and his brother David Hargrave, who founded the village of North Bend in 1837. George Stephenson established a line from Cincinnati to Grimsville by way of Worthington in 1814. That year, Stephenson opened the gristmill that still stands today on Main Street in downtown Worthington. In 1825, Jabez Bowen patented a land grant called "Bowen's Addition" which included present-day Worthington and part of its current neighbor Butler County. In 1830, General Solomon Winter arrived with his brigade of Union soldiers and founded what is now Westside Hospital (now Mercy Health West Side Medical Center). This hospital would become one of America's most important healthcare institutions with over 1 million patient visits between 1870 and 1990. In 1841, Benjamin Fenton erected an adobe cottage on what is now Fourth Street in downtown Worthington as his home until he purchased property southeast of town for $10 per acre from Joshua Barnes in 1840; this land became known as Fenton Place after him. The first store was built at Third Avenue and Elm Street around 1850 by Jeptha Grosse; it closed down around 1900 because there wasn't enough business to support it. In 1861, Captain Samuel Morse constructed a frame schoolhouse on Main Street for students attending Western Reserve Institute (later Cleveland State University).
