Worthington, Ohio is a small village in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, Ohio metropolitan area. The Village of Worthington was organized on February 14, 1836 as a result of the Ohio Legislature's passage of the "Village Improvement Act". The name honors General James Wilkinson who fought in the American Revolution and died in 1780 during the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The town site was chosen because it coincided with a bend in the Scioto River that made for excellent hunting and fishing spots. The first settler to arrive in what is now Worthington Township was George Higgs on November 3, 1836. Other early settlers included John Weisbarger (1802-1875), Nicholas Wessel (1807-1874), Jacob Kapp (1810-?), Peter Hegarty (born 1812), Simon Matson (born 1830), Joseph Prentice (died 1865) and Samuel Vail (1785-?). In 1870, Worthington had a population of just over 100 people; by 1900 it had grown to over 2200 residents. Manufacturing played an important role during this time period in Worthington with two major companies located there: First National Bank and Taylor Machine Company. In 1907, local farmers produced their first crops using modern methods including irrigation systems and tractor farming which allowed them to sell their produce directly to consumers instead of going through commercial distributors like those used before. The Panic of 1907 shook many small businesses throughout America which led to layoffs and mass firings within these industries such as those at First National Bank and Taylor Machine Company where many men lost their jobs forever after selling stock they did not own or holding shares that were closed out by creditors when prices went down precipitously due to worldwide economic conditions caused by overexpansionism on Wall Street known as Regulation Q! However, many other families managed to keep tight control over their businesses even though market conditions changed dramatically overnight! By 1920 only 5% of all business owners nationally were women while women made up 25%of workforce overall! With increasing mechanization came changes in work patterns too; prior generations would typically have worked one day per week for twelve hours followed by seven days off during the week; nowadays most workers are employed continuously for forty hours per week with no sick days! This relentless employment has led some villagers to feel shortchanged economically compared to adjacent areas where wages are higher but living standards are worse due partlyto reductions in government assistance programs offered unto rural Americans since World War II!! Despite these challenges villagers continue tryingTo make do despite occasional setbacks such as when tax rates were raised from 6%to 12%during 2004-2007!!! Despite this difficult past few years there has been recent progress being made especially given community EVENTS OF NOTE such as “Goal walk” campaign held on September 20th & 21st 2007 thru October 6th 2007 commemorating 150 year anniversary of founding date of Village Hall/Church/Schoolhouse….and numerous fundraisers support various community needs
