Worthington is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 19,549 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Lucas County after Cleveland. Worthington is located on the Scioto River just east of downtown Toledo, within walking distance of many popular tourist attractions such as Tate Museum and Mockingbird Hill Cemetery. The first Europeans to reach what became Worthington were French traders who established a trading post there in 1769. In 1814, General James Wilkinson's army burned down the French post and replaced it with a new one, which served as headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant during his march from Cairo, Egypt to Great Britain in 1871–72. After Ohio was admitted into the United States as part of its western territory on December 12, 1803, settlers began arriving here from that region and founded various communities including Worthington Heights (now Zanesville), Bethel (now Hudson), Northfield (now Athens), Southfield (now Strongsville), Monroeville (later Reynoldsburg) and West Union (later Alliance). In 1825, John Fenton organized an Agricultural Society which bought 10 acres of land along Scioto River to provide more fertile ground for farming than had been available before due to changes in climate brought about by freezing weather during winter months. In 1830 he built a log cabin known as Fenton's Ford on this site; it was replaced by present day Worthington City Hall in 1902. For most of its history until World War II, Worthington was home to two large textile mills owned by Case & Company: Case’s Mill #1 near East Market Street and Case’s Mill #2 on Detroit Avenue just north of Washington Boulevard; both were closed down during World War II but remain standing today as community memorials to those lost at war with Japan or Germany. In 1957–58 when Interstate 75 was being constructed through central Toledo, much attention was given to plans for an interchange at what is now I-75/I-670 southbound exit 3 (exit 5a now calls itself “Old Main Road”). At that time there were few if any other destinations between downtown Toledo and Xenia other than Akron or Springfield so Route 66 Scenic Byway designation wasn't too important back then – until later when I-675 bypassing town completely came about . . . That same year also saw construction start on Brown Terminal Wharf next door where Browns Container Lines used to store their boxes before container shipping became big business hereabouts . . . Widespread economic decline starting around 1990 led eventually to some loss of jobs hereabouts although many are currently still employed locally within local companies such as Progressive Auto Parts Inc., Master Lock & Key Co., First National Bank & Trust Company - all headquartered inside current day city limits! Today though things are looking up especially because several major projects are planned or already underway like new housing developments called "The Ring" northwest off I-675 near George Mason University campus while also another development called "Stronghold" southwest off I-675 between State Fair Park Drive & Delaware Avenue will soon bring much needed vibrancy back into this once struggling area!

Worthington was founded in 1788 by John Worthington and his wife Deborah. The town was named after the English county of Worthington, which had been donated to the new United States by King George III. The first settler in Worthington was Moses Johnson, who built a log cabin on what is now State Road 5. Johnson's Cabin served as the nucleus of what would become Worthington. In 1821, two brothers, Ezra and Solomon Stone, started a grocery store in town and quickly became successful. They later sold the store to Dr. David Browning and moved out of town. Browning renamed the store First National Bank of Worthington, which it still is today. In 1865, a post office was established at Worthington with Wm. Hockaday as the first mail carrier. By 1870, there were six stores in town and over 100 residents; however, sales growth slowed down during the Civil War because many people left for military service or other opportunities outside of Ohio. After the war ended, business grew again but struggled during Reconstruction due to high taxes and competition from larger towns in central Ohio that had come into being as a result of Reconstruction policies put into place by President Ulysses S. Grant
Worthington was founded in 1792 by James Worthington and his brother, Edward. The first settler, John Worthington, arrived in 1793. In 1814, the town was moved from its original location to what is now the city of Cincinnati.
