Worthington is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Dayville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Worthington was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1790s. The first white person to live in what is now Worthington was John Worthington, who purchased land from the Shawnee Indians in 1802. In 1812, President James K. Polk visited the town and ordered all federal troops out of Ohio until he could be sure that Indian affairs were being handled properly. In 1865, George Stephenson built an railroad through Worthington and other towns on his line between Dayton and Cincinnati. When Congress passed legislation providing for voting rights for citizens of ethnic groups not included in traditional U.S. Census categories (eastern Europeans and African Americans), Worthington overwhelmingly voted to become a racial minority-free city under white control according to provisions made into law by then-Mayor Nicholas Biddle Sr.. A commission appointed by Mayor Biddle oversaw the implementation of this program which ended with Cleveland's incorporation as a city in 1923 despite protests from residents who alleged discrimination based on race and ethnicity still existed throughout Cleveland proper; however, black residents did gain full voting rights following passage of Cleveland's ordinance granting them civil rights on November 3, 1938). Worthington experienced steady growth during World War II due to its proximity to manufacturing plants such as Carden Manufacturing Company (now Avon Products) and American Aircraft Corporation (AAC) facilities located nearby at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base/Militarized Zone Airport (). After America entered World War II with plans for rapid expansion following victory over Japan (), many factories closed due primarily to shortages of labor caused by wartime regulations forbidding dual use of equipment with Japanese military materials (). However, many businesses reopened thanks to government stimulus programs (); among these were Tucker’s general store which reopened after being closed during WWII; Chrysler’s Toledo plant which resumed production after being closed during war years; Iveco’s Coventry factory which produced trucks; Armstrong Whitworth began producing engines at their Oldsmobile plant near Bellefontaine while Malvern Hills Business Park grew rapidly developing into one of Ohio’s largest shopping malls () finally closing operations following bankruptcy in 1987 (). In recent years there has been significant redevelopment activity taking place within central downtown including new retail development (), regenerating older buildings into mixed-use neighborhoods () as well as major construction projects such as the $250 million renovation and expansion of Lorain County Jail ; plans are also underway for a new hospital adjacent to Lorain County Courthouse . According to 2000 US Census data, there are 2,567 people living in Worthington Township unincorporated areas or scattered parts thereof making it about 97% White Protestant . The only Hispanic population concentration is found within 5 miles outside downtown where there are 7 people registered with Spanish language skills (). Most nonwhite ancestry can be found within 10 miles outskirts either south or easttown along I-675 while most white ancestry can be found closer north along I-465 around Parma Heights Blvd., SR 716 & SR 620 etc.). ItalianAmericans make up 1% of total township Population but they account for almost half (45%)of all jobs held inside township limits – an unusual pattern given that Italy isn't especially close politicallyto any U.S.–based communities other than Detroit but nonetheless offers employment opportunities elsewhere (.
