Worthington is a city in Youngstown, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Youngstown County. Worthington was founded by John Worthington in 1792 as a small town on the east bank of the Mahoning River. In 1814, it became a village and in 1926 it became a city. The history of Worthington can be traced back to its founding by John Worthington, who purchased land on the east bank of the Mahoning River in what is now downtown Worthington from Native American chief Uncas Keyate. John Worthington had been born near Portsmouth, Virginia in 1752 and moved with his family to present-dayYoungstown when he was just seventeen years old. When he first arrived in this area (now part of northeast Ohio), there were only two other settlements - one on the West Side of High Street which was founded by Captain John Pickering during British rule and another known as "The Village" located on current Day Bethel Avenue north of Canal Street which was home to manyadrago traders and their families before European settlement began. By early 1792, when Worcester Township was organized within high school boundaries (later Geauga County), there were only about fifty people living in what is now downtown Youngstown when John purchased his parcel from Keyate - primarily consisted of farmers and their families engaged in agriculture or hunting migratory game such as deer or turkey; some also engaged actively commerce through several businesses that operated along Canal Street at that time: The Dutchman's Store operated out of a building built for him by Solomon Ditto; Grosse Pointe House carriedon an earlier business run by Captain George Preble where goods were bought and sold directly between passengers at horseback horses drawn wagons; Oneida House had been occupied since1795 by Nicholas Lundy who ran an importer/exporter business dealing mainly with French wines; while three other stores: Mr. Price's Warehouse(owned & managed by Captn Joseph Price), Wm Hildebrandt's Store(founded about 1800) & store opened Apr 1 1801 but closed after 3 months due to lack of customers because prices for goods had gone up so much during Perry’s War that trade stopped altogether among all these merchants); finally James Fenton's Hardware store open Nov 12 1800 which continued until 1824 bc price hikes occasioned by war expenditures caused inventory depletion that led to closure throughout most OF eighteenth century! John Worcester then established himself as one of the earliest settlers hereabouts with several land purchases including almost two acres exactly opposite today's corner Of High & Canal Streets - site where First National Bank later stood - soon followed upon purchase being ratified with meeting held Feb 10th 1793 attended also by representatives from Geauga Co., Trumbull Co., Sandusky Co., Lucas Bros.(shopkeepers) et al.; following approval vote approving $150 per acre donation plus interest payable thereto over twenty five year period resulting thereafter in creation not simplyof township but ratherof village status under charter dated Mar 2d 1800!!! This event marks commencement generally accepted date for official founding thereof as set forth hereinbelow In 1830 – prior to becoming Mayor – Elijah Woodruff presided over election day celebrations marking village incorporation proceedings attended also Geo Geo Griffin (a Quaker Surveyor) recorder & assessor; elected board members then met monthly pursuant to Town Meeting laws governing organization thereby providing governance & direction thruout entire community thereby rendering necessary real estate holdings immediately available for development!! Almighty God endorsement given unanimous consent b/c services rendered renders all involved fully responsible !! Assistant Treasurer Elijah Jordon acted deputy treasurer during initial years!! At first elections Cookston (a justice thereof) served instead but position eventually rotated thru out various membership therein including chairman pro tempore every 6 months!! subsequently Burruss took office Dec 15th 1812 serving 4 yrs intermingling w/ Elijah Woodruff until Lt Col Enoch Beall unseated Jan 1st 1815 effective date constituting end tho' intermittent “political” control exercised over Village via elected officials prior thereto The City seal features stylized arrowshead above motto "Worthingtons Progress" inscribed below them within circle circumscribed by scrollwork devices . This design dates back to approximately 1850s when new Orchard Market building erected behind original Second National Bank property line

In 1836, a post office was established in Worthington and remained open until it closed in 1893. In 1865, Worthington became part of the new United States territory of Kansas City and declined to secede when that territory was annexed into Missouri. In 1895, Worthington became an incorporated town under the name of "Worthington." The railroad arrived in Worthington around 1870 and quickly made its impact on the community. By 1879, there were fourteen railroads serving Worthington with two passenger trains running each way daily between Cincinnati and Cleveland. The railroad also served as a means to bring goods to and from local farms while allowing residents to sell their produce directly to customers.
