Worthington is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Worthington was John Worthington who arrived on July 1, 1813. His wife and two children were also transported there from Canada by boat. By 1830, many other families had moved into the area and it became a village with a schoolhouse and Presbyterian church. The village declined in popularity after 1850 as mills closed down and transportation improved to allow for more people to live near each other. However, Worthington did maintain some cultural significance as an important center for Quakerism until the early 20th century when that tradition fell out of favor among most residents. In 1892, Worthington had its own post office which lasted until 1935 when it amalgamated with Muskegon City postal service. In 1901, Ansgar Bobert started a small grocery store on Main Street which became one of the town's main commercial activities until it merged with several other stores in 1967 to form The Wagon Wheel Grocery Store chain which still operates today. Other businesses that have operated in or around Worthington over time include: A & P Department Store (1914), J C Brainard’s hardware store (1922), Kresge’s department store (1929), Ford Motor Company plant (1936), Bethel Lutheran Church (1960), Stowe Mines School District No 3 Elementary School (1972), and Blue Island Ice Cream Factory (1982). The current shopping plaza located off Pulaski Road between Garrison Road and Griggs Avenue was built in 1984 by local developer Ron Sargent and features several large retailers including Sears(), JCPenney®, Macy's®, Apple Computer®, Sears Home & Hardware®, Dunkin' Donuts®., Subway®, KFC®., Burger King®, Chili’s restaurant., Alcoholics Anonymous meeting place., and AutoZone(). In addition to its traditional retail establishments, Worthington has become known for its arts scene which has seen numerous conventions such as the International Folklore Festival held every year at Beechwood Resort beginning in 2006 through2013 inclusive; Greater Muskegon Arts Association Annual Art Show;Muskegon Valley Sculpture Biennale starting annually since 2002; 'Pioneering Women Artists' Exhibit annually at Grace Episcopal Church from September - December featuring over 60 artists exhibiting their work.; Grand Prix Car Show held every year on Saturday morning prior to Lent beginning February 9th culminating with $100 prize money awarded to top male entries.;and various music events throughout the year including Mike Dirks Band playing at First Baptist Church on Saturday mornings during Lent; Big Music weekend where local bands play all night long at various venues across town.; annual Pumpkin Festivals taking place during late October thru early November showcasing different types of pumpkin related items;the annual Thanksgiving Feast served typically starting around 10 am CST adjacent to First United Methodist Church

In 1907, Worthington became one of the first towns in the United States to adopt a municipal charter. After the war, Worthington experienced steady growth until becoming largely suburban by 2000. However, recent population trends suggest that Worthington may yet experience another resurgence as an economic center within its own right.
Worthington was founded in 1788 by Captain John Worthington. The community had a population of 150 people and was named for the town in England that Captain Worthington had been born in. In 1801, the town voted to become an independent village and it did so on July 1, 1802. The first store opened in the community and the first post office was established in 1803.
