Goodrich built a sawmill on the current site of Grandview Avenue in 1830 and named it Wooster after his father-in-law's home country (Italy). In 1836, when Ohio became a state,Wooster became its county seat; until that time it had been located in Northwest Township (now part of Youngstown). In 1870–71, when Ohio moved its capital from Harrisburg to Cleveland due to flooding damage caused by Hurricane Andrew,Wooster became again its county seat; but because there were no new seats available in Lucas County after Perrysville was annexed into Cleveland in 1908 (see History of Lucas County), it remained an unincorporated community until 1971 when it incorporated under its present name. Wooster is a small town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Wooster was Nicholas Wooster in 1814. He and his family were the owners of the log cabin which still stands on the corner of Elm and Washington Streets. Wooster became a part of Ashland County in 1827 and its first courthouse was built in 1830. In 1836, Wooster's post office was renamed Mechanicsburg after Mechanic Nicholas Hildebrandt who had donated land for it. The community developed rapidly during the 1840s as manufacturing became dominant in eastern Ohio due to new technologies such as zinc production from ore mined northeast of Wooster. By 1850, over 60% of the village's residents were employed within industry or agriculture; however, by 1870 this percentage had fallen to 10%. Many locals left Wooster during the Great Depression because they could not find work and many businesses closed their doors altogether. With few exceptions (the reopened Mechanicsburg Post Office and two churches), most businesses closed between 1930 and 1940 due to war-time restrictions on employment that made it difficult to keep up with advances in technology. When World War II began, many residents enlisted in service but few returned home because of wartime rationing policies that limited food available for civilians as well as military personnel. However, around 1945 there began to be an increase in veterans returning home from overseas combat roles through propaganda broadcasts from American forces active overseas that conveyed tales ofExcellent food shortages back at home caused many people to distant themselves again from their homespun villages until recently! Afterward came a period where much crime took place outside the village limits - largely stemming from young men lured away by high school gangs into criminal activity near larger cities - until recently!
